Woman on horseback leads Sudbury rescue workers to injured man in woods

SUDBURY A woman on a horse was a key component in the rescue of a bicyclist who was injured in the woods on Monday, authorities said.

The woman, whom police did not identify, led rescue workers into the Hop Brook Marsh Conservation area off Dutton Road to the injured man, police spokesman Lt. John Perodeau said.

"She was extremely helpful," he said.

Police received a 911 call at 2:10 p.m. about the bicyclist, who was with several others riding through the woods when he fell and injured himself. A woman on horseback happened upon the scene and went to meet police and firefighters to lead them back to the injured man.

The Fire Department, using its RTV (rescue terrain vehicle), followed the woman into the woods. Perodeau said the man was a "good distance" into the woods. Firefighters loaded the man, who is in his 60s, onto the RTV and brought him out by about 3 p.m.

The injured man was then taken by ambulance to Haskell Field on Fairbanks Road, where a medical rescue helicopter transported him to Brigham & Women's Medical Center in Boston.

Perodeau said he did not know the nature of the man's injuries or his current condition, but said he was conscious and alert when taken out of the woods.
