Hand recount

Under a new state law, Williamson County is required to hand recount the top contested race in randomly selected precincts. A selection of absentee, early voting and election day ballots will be counted.

The law will be expanded to the rest of Tennessee's 95 counties in 2024.

The recount will take place 10 a.m. May 12. The races that will be recounted are circuit court judge (Division II) on the Republican ballot and county clerk on the Democratic ballot.

Williamson County used new voting machines this election cycle following vote tabulation discrepancies found during the October election. The discrepancies did not affect the final vote tally of those elections, which were verified through a hand count.

Jonathan Duda, chairman of the Election Commission, said voters provided positive feedback about the new voting machines. All the tallies matched and the commission was happy with the support provided by the vendor Electronic Systems & Software.

The election results will remain unofficial until certified by the Election Commission in the next few weeks.
