Senegal ruling PASTEF party is poised to win a parliamentary majority as main opposition leaders conceded defeat Monday in elections determining whether newly elected President Bassirou Diomaye Faye can carry out ambitious reforms he promised during his campaign. Former president Macky Sall, leader of the main opposition Takku Wallu coalition, congratulated PASTEF in a post on the X social media platform. Two other major opposition leaders had already conceded defeat hours after the polls closed on Sunday.

Satellite-internet has become an alternative connectivity solution across Africa with the popularity of providers such as Starlink, operated by Elon Musk's SpaceX. LEO satellites provide high-speed internet even in areas where terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure such as fibre and mobile broadband is difficult and expensive to deploy.

Spirit Airlines files for bankruptcy as financial losses pile up and debt payments loom
Spirit Airlines said Monday that it has filed for bankruptcy protection and will attempt to reboot as it struggles to recover from the pandemic-caused swoon in travel and a failed attempt to sell the airline to JetBlue. Spirit said it expects to operate as normal as it works its way through a prearranged Chapter 11 bankruptcy process and that customers can continue to book and fly without interruption. Shares of Miramar, Florida-based Spirit dropped 25% on Friday, after The Wall Street Journal reported that the airline was discussing terms of a possible bankruptcy filing with its bondholders.

BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) -Chinese electronics maker Xiaomi Corp posted a 30.5% jump in third-quarter revenue as consumers clamoured for its first electric vehicle, the SU7 sedan. Xiaomi launched the car, which draws styling cues from Porsche, in March, entering a crowded China EV market with an attention-grabbing price tag - under $30,000 for the base model, $4,000 cheaper than the base model of Tesla's Model 3 in China. To keep up with demand, Xiaomi has doubled production shifts since June and launched the premium SU7 Ultra model priced at more than $110,000.

Israeli strikes kill 18 Palestinians in Gaza, some in attacks on tents, say medics
CAIRO/GAZA (Reuters) -Israeli military strikes across the Gaza Strip killed 18 Palestinians on Monday, including six people who were killed in attacks on tents housing displaced families, medics said. Four people, two of them children, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a tent encampment in the coastal area of Al-Mawasi, designated as a humanitarian zone, while two were killed in temporary shelters in the southern city of Rafah and another in drone fire, health officials said. In Beit Lahiya town in northern Gaza, medics said an Israeli missile struck a house, killing at least two people and wounding several others.
