What's cooking in Templeton? This bear wants to know.
No, it's not a picnic basket, or even a bird feeder, but this bear wandered onto a Templeton back deck to see if it could find some food on the grill.
The bear actually climbed the resident's fence before wandering up to the deck.
According to MassWildlife, there are an estimated 4,500 bears in Massachusetts, living primarily in Middlesex and Worcester counties as well as western Massachusetts.
Because bears have become accustomed to human-associated food sources, residents are urged to remove items from their yards that could be seen as food sources, including bird feeders, pet food and trash. Electric fences are encouraged around bee hives and chicken coops.
Wild bears are said to be wary of people. Should you see a bear on your property, you should be able to scare it away by making a lot of noise and yelling at it. Bears that are more accustomed to people might ignore the noise and keep on eating.
