Westport boys soccer captures sectional title, advance to Final Four in D5 state tourney
MEDFIELD — The magical playoff ride continues for the Westport boys soccer team.
Sophomore Ben Novo scored the winning goal in the 76th minute off a corner kick to lift the seventh seed Wildcats to a 1-0 victory over second seed MIllis during Saturday's Division V state quarterfinal game at Medfield High School.
Westport (16-2-2) moves on to the Final Four to face third seed Douglas High Tuesday at Ashland High School, beginning at 5 p.m.
"An incredibly hard-fought victory against a big, physical, athletic team," Wildcats head coach Chris Parker said. "I am so proud of the boys."
The defensive back four of Dom Vitorino, Jonathan Letendre, Ryan Borges and Nick DosVais was outstanding on defense. Central midfielders Nick Arruda, Coltrane McGonigle and Novo played great.
Noah Amaral had six saves, earning the shutout.
"The combination of determination, skill, and grit has allowed this incredible group of young men to achieve such an accomplishment," Parker said. "I couldn't be prouder of them."
FOOTBALL
Westwood 41, Somerset Berkley 40
The Raiders committed six turnovers and dropped their non-playoff game against Westwood on the road Saturday night.
Davis Sullivan and Dylan Rodriguez had touchdowns for SB, who dropped their record to 3-6.
Northeast 49, Diman 14
The Bengals lost their game to Northeast Tech. in the opening round of the state vocational tournament on the road Saturday.
Jayden Massey scored both touchdowns for Diman (4-5).
Bishop Stang 34, West Bridgewater 32, 2 OT
The Spartans won an exciting, double-overtime game against West Bridgewater in a non-playoff game at home Saturday.
Noah Grigson threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another in the win for Stang, who won just their second game of the season.
Michael Golden had a pair of rushing touchdowns while Jackson Tingley-Prince hauled in two touchdown passes.
CROSS COUNTRY
Durfee
Maggie O'Connell and Camryn Legendre each had solid performances for Durfee during Saturday's Cross Country MIAA Division IA meet at Wrentham Developmental Center.
Durfee Cross Country MIAA Division 1a meet at Wrentham Developmental Center.
O'Connell finished in 42nd place just missing out on qualifying for All States. She ran a season-best time of 20:24. Legendre finished in 124th place with a time of 22:34, which was one of her fastest times this season.
