Although Westlake’s Cade Klubnik still hopes to play two more games in his high school career, the awards have started rolling in for the state’s top quarterback recruit.

Klubnik received the 2021-22 Gatorade Texas Football Player of the Year honor Tuesday, becoming the second Westlake quarterback to win the award in the past five years.

Sam Ehlinger won it as a junior in 2016 after setting a Westlake record with 71 total touchdowns and leading the Chaps to the Class 6A Division II state title game. Two other area quarterbacks have won the award. Garrett Gilbert of Lake Travis earned it in 2008 and became the first player from Texas to win the national honor, and Hutto’s Chase Griffin received the state award as a senior in 2018.

Klubnik, a five-star Clemson pledge and the highest-rated quarterback recruit in the nation according to 247Sports, will lead unbeaten and top-ranked Westlake into the Class 6A Division II semifinals Saturday against No. 2 Katy. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Klubnik has thrown for 2,486 yards and 34 touchdowns with just two interceptions in 11 games this season and added 362 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing. He has a 28-0 record as a starter, dating back to his sophomore season.

Now in its 37th year, the Gatorade award recognizes one Texas high school football player who demonstrates athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field.

Off the field, Klubnik has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics and youth sports programs and maintained an A average in the classroom.

In addition to being named Texas’ best high school football player, Klubnik will be a finalist for the Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award, which will be announced later this month.
