West Nassau extends cheer dynasty; Bartram Trail, Bishop Snyder, Ponte Vedra win titles

Northeast Florida's longest-lasting cheerleading dynasty carries on.

West Nassau captured an eighth consecutive Florida High School Athletic Association cheerleading championship Wednesday night, and three other Jacksonville-area programs vaulted to the top of the podium during two days of competition at the O'Connell Center in Gainesville.

The Warriors, winners of 11 of the past 12 FHSAA competitive cheer titles, edged Baldwin in the Class 1A medium non-tumbling division to win a battle of cheer dynasties. Baldwin had won the last three championships at the large non-tumbling category, but the two were aligned in the same category this year.

The matchup was heavily anticipated and proved tight as expected: Baldwin had edged West Nassau by a fraction of a point at the regional championships two weeks ago, but the Warriors got the edge in the state final — 88.50 to 87.60 — to bring another trophy back to Callahan.

Meanwhile, Duval County will be adding championship hardware of its own after Bishop Snyder's victory in the small non-tumbling division. The Cardinals scored 82.70 points, ahead of runner-up West Palm Beach King's Academy.

Bishop Snyder has won three consecutive titles and four of the last five, holding the all-time lead for a school located within Jacksonville's city limits.

In Class 2A, Bartram Trail continued its own St. Johns County cheerleading streak by capturing first place in the large division, scoring 83.70 points to finish ahead of Wellington. The title was the Bears' sixth, joining past triumphs in 2008, 2015, 2017, 2020 and 2021.

Ponte Vedra, meanwhile, earned its first state title after second-place finishes in 2012 and 2020. The Sharks captured the Class 1A medium championship, scoring 87.60 points to top Bishop Moore by a margin of 4.1.

Clay and Oakleaf turned in strong showings to represent Clay County, coming in second in their Class 2A categories. Clay was runner-up in large co-ed, while Oakleaf competed in medium non-tumbling. Providence placed third in the Class 1A small division and Fleming Island took third in Class 1A medium co-ed.
