Ugandan leader pledges to continue using military courts despite ban
Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni said on Saturday his government would continue to prosecute civilians in military tribunals even after the country's top court banned the practice, ruling it unconstitutional. In a majority decision on Friday, the east African country's Supreme Court banned prosecutions of civilians in military courts and ordered all ongoing cases there to be transferred to civil courts. The ruling was hailed by key opposition figure Kizza Besigye's lawyer as offering him some relief during an ongoing trial by the country's general court martial.

Germany's former president Horst Koehler, who served as head of state from 2004 to 2010 and was a strong backer of Africa, died on Saturday aged 81 after a brief illness. He became Germany's head of state, a mostly ceremonial role, after being put forward by then opposition leader Angela Merkel, who went on to become chancellor.

Horst Koehler, former German president and IMF chief, dies at 81
Horst Koehler, former German president from 2004 to 2010 and a respected global policymaker with a particular interest in Africa, died on Saturday after a short illness at the age of 81, the federal presidential office said in a statement. Born in 1943 in German-occupied Poland, Koehler spent most of his early years living in refugee camps with his family before settling in Ludwigsburg, Baden-Wuerttemberg. A trained economist and member of the Christian Democrats, Koehler rose to the position of deputy finance minister under ex-Chancellor Helmut Kohl, playing a key role in bringing the West German mark to East Germany after communist rule collapsed in 1990.

18 Pakistani soldiers killed in fighting with separatist rebels in Balochistan
Pakistani troops fought insurgents who set up roadblocks in the restive northwestern region of Balochistan, leaving 18 paramilitary security forces and 23 rebels dead in some of the heaviest clashes in recent years, officials said Saturday. The military said troops suffered casualties when they engaged the insurgents who erected barricades on a key highway in Kalat, bordering Afghanistan. The security forces “successfully removed the roadblock” following the fighting overnight into Saturday morning, the military said in a statement.
