RACHELLE AKUFFO: The knockout stage of the World Cup began over the weekend with Team USA being eliminated by Team Netherlands. But for fans of the game, the battle of concessions and travel prices are the real uphill battle. Currency rates have made attending the World Cup particularly painful for travelers from South Korea, Japan, and England, making that trip to Qatar a really pricey one. All three of their currencies down against the Rial. So on top of the cost of the tickets and everything else, I mean, it bites. And then if your team gets eliminated after you've done all that, that doubles the pain.

AKIKO FUJITA: Yeah, worth noting the Qatari Rial is pegged to the US dollar. We've talked so much, Rachelle, over the last few months about the strength of the dollar. Even though we've seen a bit of a pullback, it's worth pointing out these numbers. The Rial has strengthened nearly 9% against the Korean won, up nearly 20% against the yen, and then 10% versus the pound. And those are all the three countries that you mentioned.

Obviously, any trip to the World Cup a very expensive one when you think about the cost of the ticket. Could you imagine having to even just buy drinks? I mean, that starts to bite when you think about the currency peg there and how much these currencies have weakened against the Rial. I mean, hey, England's still in it, right? It's got to be worth it for those fans who went out there.

RACHELLE AKUFFO: I mean, it is, but when it's like 3 pounds-- like 3 pounds 30 for a can of soda, I mean, that's a-- I'm not paying that. I'd rather go thirsty. That's just-- it's too expensive. Look at that. That's also almost basically $5 there for a soda and almost $6 for a hot dog. I'm not doing that.

AKIKO FUJITA: Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. With the temperatures out in Qatar, I think some days you probably have no choice. But it's been fun to watch. Obviously, my teams, the US and Japan, have been eliminated. I know you've been running for Ghana as well as England. England's still in it. So we'll see where it goes. But in the meantime, the cost is going to continue to go up.
