Krispy Kreme debuts Oreo-glazed donuts

Yahoo Finance's Alexandra Canal joined Yahoo Finance Live to discuss Krispy Kreme's new donut offerings.

Video Transcript

- Krispy Kreme donuts and Oreo cookies. Where could you go wrong with that?

ALEXANDRA CANAL: I had the same question, Adam, which is why I'm going to be taste-testing Krispy Kreme's newest collaboration. They collaborated with Oreo to create a brand new glaze. You can see the glaze here. This is the first time in the company's 84-year history that they've ever partnered with another brand to create a brand new glaze flavor. But here we have these Oreo donuts.

There's two different ones. Here you have your classic, and then you have the over the top, which is basically everything that the classic has, but way much more. So I'm going to try the classic version first. This is stuffed with cookies and cream filling, has a glaze, you see there's, like, chunks of Oreos at the top. So let's see what we think.

OK. As you can see, there's a lot of filling in here. It's pretty good. It's actually not as sweet as I thought it would be. But this is the one--

- We're gaining weight just watching you eat it.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: I know, right? Like, there goes my summer diet, guys, sorry. But this one, I don't even know if I can fit my (MUFFLED) mouth on it.

Oh, boy.

- Is that a good oh, boy or a bad oh, boy.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: This is a good oh, boy. I'm going with this one all the way. I mean, if you're going to do the donut, do the over the top one. This is pretty good. I may give this a five out of five. It's very good.

- Yeah, if you're going for the donut, not no need to hold back.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: It's not bikini bod approved. So you take what you can get.

- Allie, it's interesting, though, if we look at what Krispy Kreme has done more broadly speaking, just the number of promotions and the different items that they are trying out. Because we talked about-- they were in the news a couple of weeks ago that they were offering free donuts for people who are vaccinated. I know they also have a couple of other promotions that they roll out during the week. So it's just an-- I guess it's a smart strategy on their part that they are taking this initiative and doing that.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: It is. And the only reason I got these donuts today was because I called and ordered them ahead of time. When I went to go pick them up, they said they completely sold out. I asked, is that typical? And they said, yeah. Because we do these limited time promotions, people flock to the stores to get a taste of them.

You mentioned the fact that they were giving away free donuts to anyone that received a COVID vaccine shot. That did come under a little bit of controversy, with critics saying the obesity problem in America is a pandemic as well. And this sort of sends the wrong message. Even more than that, people that are overweight, they're more at risk if they contract COVID-19.

We did speak to the CEO of Krispy Kreme just last week. And he said that really, this is all about generosity. If you want to have a donut, have a donut. If you don't, you don't have to. So they said they're not forcing this on anyone. It's just a nice sweet treat to get people through these rough times.

But it is a good strategy. And I think that's why you always hear about Krispy Kreme in the news and you always hear about their innovative products like the Oreo one right here.

- First I thought it was going to be way too sweet, but after I heard your oh, boy and then your reaction, it's making me want to try one. So we'll see.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: I recommend it.

- --Krispy Kreme is in my future. Allie Canal, thanks so--
