University of Cincinnati board approves extension for Bearcats basketball coach Wes Miller

Despite an up-and-down start to Wes Miller's tenure as University of Cincinnati men's basketball coach, the school still has faith that the 39-year-old is the man for the job.

Cincinnati announced Wednesday that the school's board of trustees approved a new two-year contract extension for Miller that will run through the 2028-29 season.

With the extension, Miller’s average annual salary grows from $1.31 million to $2.95 million.

"We have the right coach to lead us into the Big 12 in Wes Miller," Cincinnati Director of Athletics John Cunningham said. "This new contract extension provides further stability and increases investment into our men's basketball program, which will set us up for success in the best league in America. Wes is one of the best young coaches in the country. He is building something special here at Cincinnati. We share his commitment to winning and look forward to competing for championships in the coming years."

Miller originally signed a six-year deal worth $7,875,000 in April 2021 when he was hired as the 28th men's basketball coach in school history.

Miller is 24-19 since taking over the Bearcats program, including a 6-4 start this season. Cincinnati lost to crosstown rival Xavier 80-77 on Saturday. It was UC's fourth straight defeat in the Crosstown Shootout rivalry series.

UC Board also approves contract for new football coach Scott Satterfield

UC's board also officially approved the hire and contract of new Bearcats football coach Scott Satterfield.

The 49-year-old Satterfield, who was announced Dec. 5 as the 43rd coach in program history, agreed to a six-year deal that will pay him $3.4 million in the first year with an annual raise of $100,000, according to the university.

Satterfield will receive an assistant coach staff salary pool of $7.25 million, making the total compensation $10.65 million per year for the football coaching staff. Cincinnati described it as its "highest investment ever" in the football staff.

The Cincinnati football team (9-3) will take on Louisville (7-5) – Satterfield's former team – in the Fenway Bowl on Saturday at Fenway Park in Boston. Satterfield will not coach in the bowl game.

Cincinnati is set to leave the American Athletic Conference and join the Big 12 Conference on July 1, 2023.
