Undisputed opens mobile barbershop in Chillicothe

CHILLICOTHE — Undisputed Faith Based Barbershop has opened a mobile barbershop to assist those with limited mobility or who can't easily travel, but also for those who are looking for a convenient haircut.

Jemar Harris, owner and barber, opened his first barbershop to create a unique business that gives customers a personal, faith-based experience. His second endeavor, the mobile barbershop, is aimed at giving customers a similar, yet one-of-a-kind experience.

"This is more personal for people," Harris said. "They can get a haircut experience without being bothered and have to deal with the world."

His first mobile barbershop client was Richard Winfield, a blind relative who hasn't had a haircut in months because of physical limitations and safety measures against COVID-19.

"He was so happy. He said, 'man, give me a word. Give me a word.'... I brought the ministry and gave him a word," Harris said. "He didn't have to go but 10 steps away to get in to get a haircut. He was amazed."

Donya Dearth, a mother of three, has taken her boys to Undisputed for over a year. She was more than excited to visit the mobile barbershop this month.

Her 6-year-old son, Donovan, has autism and a sensory processing disorder, making a haircut more challenging. He does not like people touching his face or the buzzing of the clippers. However, Dearth said that Harris "kept his cool" with her son.

"It took us a while to find a barber that was able to work with him and have patience with him and still do a good job all at the same time," Dearth said. "It was a really great experience."

It can also be "chaotic" to take three children under six to get a haircut, so the mobile barbershop was a convenient option for Dearth.

The mobile barbershop began as an ordinary, confined bus. Harris transformed the bus into a cozy, seemingly spacious mobile barbershop with a television, recliners and a barber chair. He was able to create his vision with an Undisputed spin.

The mobile barbershop is currently not wheelchair accessible, but Harris hopes to change that and potentially add a second mobile barbershop to his business.

His idea has inspired others to follow in his footsteps. A minister and barber from London, Ohio reached out to Harris for information on how to create his own mobile barbershop. Harris said he's glad that he can inspire community outreach.

"Don't let nobody say that it can't be done," Harris said. "Stay focused through the work ahead of you and keep moving forward until it's done. See things through. You will be amazed."
