UNC basketball’s highest-rated recruit — and another top signee — aiming for USA Basketball

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina basketball recruits Seth Trimble and GG Jackson have the opportunity to experience international competition with USA Basketball’s under-18 national team.

The pair is among a group of 27 players expected to participate in a USA Basketball training camp from May 26-June 2 in Houston, ahead of the 2022 FIBA U18 Americas Championship from June 6-12 in Tijuana, Mexico.

Those chosen for the training camp will be trying out for 12 spots on the U.S. team, coached by Colorado’s Tad Boyle and assistants Mike Boynton Jr. (Oklahoma State) and Leon Rice (Boise State). The selected players represent the high school graduating classes of 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Jackson, the 6-9 junior forward from Columbia, S.C., recently gave North Carolina its highest-ranked commitment under coach Hubert Davis. Considered a five-star prospect and the No. 8 recruit nationally in the Class of 2023, Jackson supplied 22.1 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots per game while leading Ridge View High School to a state title in South Carolina’s largest classification.

Five-star guard Caleb Foster and four-star guard Jared McCain, two Duke commits in the Class of 2023, will join Trimble and Jackson on the training camp roster for USA Basketball’s under-18 team. Arkansas, Oregon and Villanova also have pairs of commits expected to participate.

Jackson took part in a USA Basketball junior national team mini-camp last month in New Orleans. The Tar Heels are coming off a magical run to the Final Four and NCAA championship game.

U.S. teams have claimed the gold medal at the FIBA U18 Americas Championships in nine of the 11 tournaments since the event began in 1990.
