UNC basketball’s Armando Bacot passes Tyler Hansbrough for Tar Heels’ rebounding record

No player in the history of North Carolina basketball has grabbed more rebounds than Armando Bacot.

Bacot, a senior forward for the Tar Heels, had 17 rebounds with 6:54 remaining in the second half against NC State to pass Tyler Hansbrough (1,219 rebounds) as the school’s all-time leader.

"It means everything," said Bacot, who finished with 23 points and 18 rebounds.

Carolina’s double-double machine needed 17 rebounds to pass Hansbrough, who led UNC to a national championship in 2009. With his 61st career double-double, Bacot broke a tie with Billy Cunningham for the program’s all-time record. He grabbed his 10th rebound with 15:53 left in the second half.

Bacot, who is averaging 17.6 points and 11.2 rebounds, had a season-best 23 against James Madison.

"Every day at practice, shootaround, games, you know that he's gonna give his best on both ends of the floor for himself, for the team, for this program," UNC coach Hubert Davis said.

"For him to pass Tyler Hansbrough and Billy Cunningham ... that's just unbelievable. He's a fantastic player. He's one of the best players in Carolina history. I'm just really, really proud of him."
