It's unanimous: Iowa State's Izaiah Brockington a first-team pick, Big 12 newcomer of the year

It’s unanimous: Iowa State’s Izaiah Brockington is an all-Big 12 Conference first-team pick by both the coaches and the Associated Press.

The AP team, selected by media covering the conference, made it official Tuesday, two days after the coaches also picked him. The Philadelphia native not only was a first-team selection on both, but also unanimously the 10-team conference’s top newcomer.

Brockington averaged 17.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists a game, while shooting 46.9% from the floor and 39.2% from 3-point range.

The media’s team does not include a freshman of the year. The coaches’ team did, and that honor went to Iowa State’s Tyrese Hunter, who averaged 10.8 points, five assists and 3.4 rebounds a game during the regular season.

Sixth-seeded Iowa State opens the Big 12 Conference tournament at 8:30 p.m. Thursday against No. 3 seed Texas Tech, whose coach, Mark Adams, was the AP conference coach of the year. The distinction went to Baylor’s Scott Drew on the coaches’ team.
