Tye Kartye, Jesper Frödén and Chris Driedger to re-join the Firebirds for Wednesday's game
The Coachella Valley Firebirds are expected to have Tye Kartye, Jesper Frödén and Chris Driedger in uniform Wednesday for Game 4 of their Calder Cup Playoffs series versus the Calgary Wranglers.
Firebirds’ director of hockey operations Troy Bodie confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Kartye and Driedger were are being reassigned from the Seattle Kraken following Seattle’s elimination from the Stanley Cup Playoffs Monday.
Bodie also said that Jesper Frödén would re-join the Firebirds, provided he clears waivers. Frödén cleared waivers Wednesday.
Kartye, the American Hockey League rookie of the year, was a breakout star for the Kraken after joining the team in their first round series against the Colorado Avalanche. He and Frödén combined for 55 goals and 54 assists for the Firebirds this season.
Kartye, a 22-year-old forward, scored three goals and added two assists in 10 games for the Kraken this postseason. He scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game, becoming just the eighth player to do that in the playoffs.
Frödén, a 28-year-old forward, played one playoff game with the Kraken. He was the Firebirds’ leading goal scorer until he was called up to Seattle on Feb. 23, having recorded 47 points (25 goals, 27 assists) in 44 games.
Driedger is a goaltender who has started 60 NHL playoff games. The 28-year-old will serve as a second option to Firebirds’ starter Joey Daccord, who recorded a career-high 60 saves Monday in a triple overtime win that helped Coachella Valley extend its lead in the five-game series to 2-1.
Game 4 is set for Wednesday at Acrisure Arena. Puck drop is 7 p.m.
"It's huge if we can get a full line of players back," Bodie said. "Like, an AHL top line. That's massive. And an NHL goalie, too. Too bad you can only play one. Joey's been playing very well but it's good to have (Driedger) as an option."
The Firebirds could use some reinforcements and free bodies after Monday’s thriller. Players were cramping on the bench and fatigued after playing 111 minutes.
Coachella Valley will also benefit from Monday’s return of AHL all-star Andrew Poturalski, a 29-year-old center who has won a pair of Calder Cups and led the league in points last season.
With a win, the Firebirds would move on to the Western Conference Finals. A loss would force a Game 5 on Friday inside Acrisure Arena.
