Tusky Valley boys and girls, Garaway girls teams among OHSAA cross country qualifiers

The Tuscarawas County area will be represented by 61 runners at the OHSAA state cross country championships Nov. 5 at Fortress Obetz.

Eight teams and five individuals qualified from Saturday's regional races at Boardman and Pickerington North.

Tusky Valley qualified both its boys and girls teams to the state finals with top five finishes in Division III at Pickerington North.

The Trojans' boys team finished fourth with 152 points. Mount Gilead (42), Belpre (128) and Fredericktown (135) finished in the top three.

Tusky Valley was led by Teagan Perkowski, who finished 23rd in 17 minutes, 8.31 seconds. Also for the Trojans, Kolton Wertz (17:40.45) was 43rd, Jake Kapper (17:41.05) was 44th, Josh Owens (17:52.29) was 52nd and Danny Hursey (18:00.05) was 56th. Also for Tusky Valley, Abe McElwee finished in 18:34.88 and Kaelli Whitlatch in 19:40.05.

Will Baker of Mount Gilead won the race in 15:41.80.

Sandy Valley, Tusky Valley and Garaway finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the Div. III girls race. Grandview Heights won the team title with 109 points, followed by Fredericktown (132), Fort Frye (136), Sandy Valley (143), Tusky Valley (168) and Garaway (183).

Sami Ward was the Trojans' top finisher, 24th in 20:33.68. Also, Trista Lieser (21:31.94) was 50th, Ella McElwee (21:49.69) was 58th, Leah Bourquin (22:07.74) was 69th, Samantha Bosler (22:28.94) was 84th, Mealeah Dillon (23:04.18) was 101st and Slaly Ray (23:11.44) was 107th.

For Garaway, Meghan Schwartz (20:21.18) was 17th, Kenadi Yoder (21:07.69) was 39th, Jessie Johnson (21:36.97) was 51st, Mya Wengerd (22:14.44) was 75th, Tori beachy (23:47.69) was 120th and Emily Rider finished in 26:26.70.

Kaydence Hoover (20:25.93) led Sandy Valley with a 20th place finish. Also, Evelyn Pfeffer (20:48.09) was 27th, Casey Russell (21:01.44) was 35th, Kalia Sarver (21:41.19) was 55th, Deana Peterson (23:16.58) was 109th, Krista Glaser (23:23.43) was 112th and Peyton Nicholson (23:55.70) was 123rd

Kylie McKenzie of Strasburg qualified as an individual after finishing 12th in a time of 20:01.66.

Minerva qualified both teams in Division II and will be joined by Carrollton's and West Holmes' girls teams at Fortress Obetz.

The Minerva boys scored 197 points to finish behind Fairfield Union (112), Granville (120), Unioto (127), Bexley (159) and Sheridan (163).

Graysn Rettig (16:10.75) led the Lions with a seventh-place finish. Mason Steele (27th, 16:44.00), Ryan Cassidy (47th, 17:21.26), Rowan Hoffee (49th, 17:23.51), Brandon Davis (109th, 18:31.26), Owen Yoder (113th, 18:35.52) and Xander (148th, Cox 20:12.51) also ran for Minerva.

Indian Valley's Xander Heil finished 13th in 16:23.26, and West Holmes' Zeke Galbraith was ninth in 16:12.50 advanced as individuals.

Granville won the Div. II girls team title with 65 points, while Minerva was second with 68, Carrollton was third with 166 and West Holmes was fourth with 177.

Minerva was led by Hera Hoffee, who finished third in 18:35.43. Kayla Crissman (11th, 19:42.04), Annabelle Crissman (16th, 19:51.44), Caitlyn Hopple (18th, 19:59.94) and Hannah Ison (33rd, 20:18.19) also scored for the Lions. Kate Ison (20:34.94) and Gabby Lupshu (21:31.18) also competed.

For Carrollton, Maddie Burgett (19:43.93) was 14th, Elizabeth Funkhouser (20:16.94) was 29th, Kylie Ijcich (20:43.69) was 40th, Hillari Baker (20:53.69) was 44th and Isabella Nuzzolillo (21:39.69) was 74th. Zoe Kuhn-Goodspeed (23:01.69) and Kayla Lewis (24:41.69) also ran.

Rylee Raymond of Indian Valley, who was 20th in 20:02.93, qualified as an individual.

New Philadelphia and Dover competed in the Division I regional at Boardman High School. Marcus Adelman of the Quakers finished 15th in the boys race, finishing in 16:20.1, to qualify as an individual.
