Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel on John Madden's death: 'Messages of encouragement' helped after losses
Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel said he was “saddened” to hear of NFL icon John Madden’s death Tuesday at age 85.
Vrabel started his Wednesday news conference by expressing condolences to Madden’s family on behalf of the Titans’ organization. Madden was a Pro Football Hall of Fame coach and legendary broadcaster who was also known for the popular Madden NFL video game series.
“I got to be a part of this small sub-committee for a brief amount of time and (Madden) would always send text messages of encouragement and I found that to be very refreshing and helped personally after losses and things that you second guess,” Vrabel said. “I would also say that something that was extremely important to him was the care that the former players received. That was a huge mission of his through that sub-committee: finding ways to make the game better, but safer and also continue to take care of those former players because he loved his players and that was evident in the way they played for him.”

Madden, who led the Raiders to their first championship in Super Bowl XI, holds the best winning percentage by an NFL head coach with a minimum of 10 seasons at .759.
He was also a popular color commentator on NFL broadcasts from 1979-2008, and graced the cover of the Madden video games series until 2001, when Titans legend Eddie George kicked off the ongoing tradition of players gracing the cover.
“Hopefully, we can carry on that legacy that he had of trying to take care of those former players that he loved so dearly,” Vrabel said.
