Suns update: Landry Shamet returns to Phoenix during road trip with injured right foot
CHICAGO – Landry Shamet’s right foot just isn't cooperating at all.
As Kevin Durant was preparing to make his Suns debut Wednesday night in Charlotte after having not played since Jan 8 with a right MCL sprain, Shamet remained out with what the team is calling right foot soreness.
“As with everything like this, it’s good and bad days,” Shamet said before Phoenix’s 105-91 win over the Hornets at Spectrum Center. “Some days you feel great, some days you don’t, unfortunately, but overall, I know I’m close. I’m doing everything I can. We’re doing everything we can collectively.”
Shamet has since returned to Phoenix for treatment as he’ll be re-evaluated again next week.
Having not played since Jan. 16 at Memphis, Shamet will miss his 19th consecutive game Friday when Phoenix (34-29) plays the Chicago Bulls (29-34) at the United Center.
The Suns end their four-game road trip Sunday at Dallas.
“Landry is a guy that I’ve been around for a while,” Suns coach Monty Williams said after Thursday practice at University of Illinois Chicago, as he was a 76ers assistant during Shamet’s rookie year in Philadelphia.
“I know how hard he works and how he wants to get back on the floor. I look at it like a big brother/uncle. I’m frustrated for him because I know he wants to play and I feel bad for him. When I see him doing all this stuff to try to get back on the floor and he has another setback, I just feel bad for him.”
Shamet didn’t play in one game in February after only seeing action in five in January.
“I’ll string four or five days together where I feel great,” Shamet said. “It’s like OK, but there are some days in there you’re not feeling great.”
He missed three games with right hip soreness, returned to face the Grizzlies on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Memphis and hasn’t played since.
“We’re just hopeful that he can get some answers as to why it keeps popping back up,” Williams said.
Averaging 9.5 points in his second season with the Suns, Shamet played in 30 games this season, starting seven. He’s missed a total of 33 games with seven spent in concussion protocols.
Shamet sat three games with right Achilles soreness and two more with a left hip strain.
"It’s kind of a timing thing,” Shamet said. “When I’m ready to be back, I’ll be back and good to go.”
