Students from Holy Family Academy learn about local government through mock city council

GARDNER – Students from Holy Family Academy who were elected to the City Council during the school’s Government Week program in April held a mock meeting at City Hall on June 1.

Seventh grader Sophia Meany chaired the meeting as city council president, while eighth grader Kelsey Ikonen attended as mayor. Among the topics discussed during the mock meeting were the purchase of energy-efficient vehicles for city departments, outdoor dining options downtown, and building a new gymnasium at the school.

The J. Ulysse Cormier School Government Program was established at Holy Rosary School in 1980 to introduce students to the importance of civic engagement and to encourage them to become involved citizens in the future.
