The Asbury Lanes interview was more expansive and largely unguarded compared to the virtual Springsteen and Van Zandt interview, called “Stevie and Bruce Live,” conducted a month prior at Springsteen's Colts Neck home.

Van Zandt was in the midst of a press run for the best-selling memoir “Unrequited Infatuations” at the time. In Asbury Lanes, the two sat on the venue's stage in front of an audience of 250.

“I'd go up into his room and he was already starting to write songs, which, you know, it hadn’t occurred to me that you could write your own songs,” said Van Zandt, a Middletown native. “You were really far advanced at that point.”

“We were so completely immersed in popular music. It was wonderful to have a friend that you can do that with,” said Springsteen, a native of Freehold. “I wish that friendship on everyone, to have it last for our entire lives.”

The conversation, which includes insight on various personal and E Street-related topics, lasted for about an hour. It followed a panel discussion on “Unrequited Infatuations” featuring Jon Stewart, Richie Sambora, Springsteen manager Jon Landau, R&B legend Nona Hendryx and actor Steve Buscemi.
