STAC girls track & field championships: 4 things you need to know from Corning's big night
Corning's girls earned their 10th Southern Tier Athletic Conference track & field title in the league's last 12 championship meets Wednesday night at Johnson City High School.
The Hawks scored 248.33 points to easily outdistance runner-up Ithaca's 116.33-point evening. Sixteen teams competed.
Four things you need to know from the STAC's first conference championships since 2019.
1,500 duel a classic
The race of the night for the girls was in the 1,500 meters and it came down to longtime Corning teammates Sarah Lawson and Faithe Ketchum, along with Susquehanna Valley's Brynn Hogan.
Hogan overtook Ketchum for the lead on the final lap, then was passed with about 60 meters remaining by Lawson, who won in 4:42.88. Ketchum rallied to take second in 4:43.29 and Hogan placed third in 4:43.96.
Hawks' depth was evident
Corning won six events, with only one repeat winner among the nine athletes who were part of those triumphs.
Cristina Gaskievicz won the 3,000 (10:48.35), Olivia Grinnell the 2,000 steeplechase (7:52.24), Lauren Gerow the 400 hurdles (1:07.82) and Sophia ReSue the high jump (5 feet).
Gerow joined Cassandra Howard, Megan Kirk and Faith Tubbs in winning the 1,600 relay (4:15.65).
Reid, Lawrence led strong Forks effort
Chenango Forks' eighth-place team finish was carried by Gianna Lawrence and Pipher Reid.
Lawrence won the 100 hurdles in 16.9 seconds. Her leaping ability was also evident in the triple jump, which she captured decisively with a top effort of 36 feet, 7 1/4 inches.
Reid was part of the Blue Devils' victory in the 3,200 relay, joining Grace Harkness, Audra Ackerson and Quinn Sirgany to win in 10:05. Reid later added a STAC title in the 400 dash (1:01.14).
A sprint sweep for JC's Nester
The combination of Dayzin Legare and Patricia Nester gives Johnson City a prolific pair of sprinters. Nester's picture-perfect form produced a win in the 100 in 13.14 and a victory in the 200 in 26.21 seconds.
Other winners Wednesday were Elmira's Ana (Vicky) Mordvinova in the 800 (2:18.31), Norwich's Shakira Alexander in the shot put (35 feet, 11 1/2 inches), Oneonta's Gabriella Ragozzine in the discus (104 feet, 3 inches), Maine-Endwell's Carly Hein in the long jump (16 feet, 7 inches) and Chenango Valley's Adelie Wilson in the pole vault (8 feet). Ithaca won the 400 relay.
