Sports scores, highlights: Diman track and field fares well at Sunset Invitational meet
The spring high school season is underway for Fall River area teams.
Here's a look at high school highlights from Saturday's action:
Outdoor Track: Diman at Sunset Invitational
LOCATION: Greater New Bedford
DATE: May 6
RECORD: N/A
HIGHLIGHTS: The Bengals track and field teams enjoyed a great night at Friday's Sunset Invitational on the road. Cashton Richard received a medal after a third place showing in 400 hurdles for Diman. Nathan Nascimento received a medal, placing sixth in 100. AJ Gesner won his heat in the 400 (55.5). Top performers for the girls were Grace Flattery first place winner in the high Jump, Inez Medeiros took fourth in the 100 and fourth in the 200 with a school-record time (26.8) and Emma Foley placed fourth in the triple jump (33'6").
NEXT UP: The Bengals will compete in the Mayflower League championship on Tuesday.
Boys Tennis: Somerset at SCC Singles and Doubles event
LOCATION: Chapman Courts, Somerset
DATE: May 7
RECORD: Somerset Berkley, 8-2 (6-2 in South Coast Conference)
HIGHLIGHTS: In an all-Somerset Berkley doubles final on Sunday, Jackson Souza and Matt Carlesi edged Ian Jepson and Ian Sullivan 6-3, 6-3 to win the South Coast Conference doubles championship. In the singles final, Apponequet's Will Horton topped Fairhaven's Kole Pinto 6-4, 6-0, in a reverse of last year's SCC championship match. Souza and Carlesi got to the finals after beating Apponequet's Eugene Jung and Ryan Abreau 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Bourne's Ryan Burgess and Ben Hopwood 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals. Jepson and Sullivan beat Seekonk's John Triano and Alex Hadro 6-2, 6-3 in the quarters and Apponequet 's Jimmy Lenza and Jake Correira 6-3, 6-3 in the semis.

Outdoor Track: Case at Jim Hoar Freshmen/Sophomore Invitational
LOCATION: Weymouth
DATE: May 6
RECORD: Case, 4-0
HIGHLIGHTS: Several Cardinal athletes fared well at Saturday's Jim Hoar freshman/sophomore meet. Deanna Brightman placed fourth place overall in triple jump (32’9.5”) for Case. Teammate Emma Bouchard took fourth place overall in 100 dash (13.1).
NEXT UP: The Cardinals face Apponequet on Thursday.
Baseball: Bishop Connolly 10, Nantucket 0
LOCATION: Nantcuket
DATE: May 6
RECORD: Bishop Connolly, 7-2 (3-1 in Mayflower Comprehensive)
HIGHLIGHTS: The Couagrs captured a shutout win against Nantucket on the road Saturday. Jayden Souza picked up the win for Connolly on the hill, allowing one hit, one walk, no runs while striking out 12. James Russell ignited the offensive in the first inning. The Cougars totaled eight hits in the game. Finnegan Hall and Jayden Pavao all managed multiple hits in the win.
NEXT UP: Connolly travels to Wareham on Monday.
