Sports scores, highlights: Diman softball tops Durfee; Connolly baseball wins opener
The spring high school season is underway for Fall River area teams.
Here's a look at high school highlights from Tuesday's action:
Softball: Diman 8, Durfee 4
LOCATION: YMCA Swansea
DATE: April 4
RECORD: Durfee, 1-2; Diman 2-0
HIGHLIGHTS: The Bengals handed Durfee their second loss of the season in their season opener. Ashley Carvalho collected the complete-game win in the circle for Diman, scattering nine hits, two earned run, no walks and fanning seven batters. Courtney Boies had a hit, scored two runs and had three RBI. Kacie Lynch finished with two hits. Evey Fernandes went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Hannah Martin had a squeeze play RBI. Alexah Pedder had three putouts in center field. Ava Amaral led the way for Durfee with three hits and a run scored. Other hitters include Katrina Rumsey, Mia Jacob (run), Emily Curran (RBI), Rachael Silva, Niyah Boone and Julia Rumsey.
NEXT UP: Diman travels to Bristol-Plymouth on Thursday while the Hilltoppers travel to Seekonk on Thursday.
Softball: Westport 14, Norfolk Aggie 6
LOCATION: Westport
DATE: April 4
RECORD: Westport, 1-0
HIGHLIGHTS: The Wildcats won their season opener against Norfolk Aggie at home. Sophomore Mackenzy Ponte was the winning pitcher for Westport with six strikeouts. Offensively, sophomore shortstop Jayda Pequita was 4-for-4 at the plate with two triples, four runs scored, and three stolen bases. Senior third baseman Peyton Mahjoory had three hits, including a double, two stolen bases and two RBI. Eighth grader second baseman Morgan Pacheco was a standout defensively and went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases. Sophomore catcher Tess Silvia had a double and three RBI.

Baseball: Bishop Connolly 5, Snowden International 1
LOCATION: Jim Rice Field, Boston
DATE: April 4
RECORD: Bishop Connolly, 1-0
HIGHLIGHTS: The Cougars won their season opener on the road against Snowden International. Connor Travis picked up the win on the hill for Connolly, allowing just three hits, no earned runs, a walk while striking out 10 batters. He also went 2-for-2 at the plate with and RBI and two stolen bases. Jayden Souza pitched 2⅔ innings in relief out of the bullpen. He recorded the last eight outs to earn the save. The Cougars did not commit an error in the field.

Baseball: Upper Cape 8, Westport 7, 9 inn.
LOCATION: Upper Cape
DATE: April 4
RECORD: Westport, 0-1
HIGHLIGHTS: The Wildcats lost in extra innings against Upper Cape in their season opener. Noah Sowle went 2-for- 5 with a double, run scored, and two stolen bases. Ben Boudria went 2-for-4 with four RBI, including the game-tying, two-run single in the top of the seventh. Westport committed five costly errors, leading to five unearned Upper Cape runs.

Baseball: Seekonk 8, Case 0
LOCATION: Seekonk
DATE: April 4
RECORD: Case, 0-2
HIGHLIGHTS: The Cardinals were blanked on the road against league opponent Seekonk. Jacob Poitras had a pair of hits for Case. Adam Gracie, Will LeBoeuf, and Lucas Saltmarsh also had hits. Will LeBoeuf pitched four innings in relief, allowing one earned run, walking none, and striking out four.

Girls Tennis: Diman 4, West Bridgewater 1
LOCATION: Fall River

RECORD: Diman, 1-0
HIGHLIGHTS: The Bengals won their season opener against West Bridgewater. Lindsey Moniz won in straight sets at first singles, 6-2, 6-1. Gloria Moniz won her first-ever match in a Diman uniform at second singles, 6-0, 6-0. Senior co-captain Sarah Moniz won at third set, 6-2, 7-5 in a strong, consistent play. At first doubles, Liz Kinnane and Sadie Krauzyk both played very well and in control of the matches, winning 6-3, 6-0. Sabrina Angeli and Olivia Demelo lost a close match at second doubles.

Girls Tennis: Somerset Berkley 3, Apponequet 2
LOCATION: Somerset Berkley

RECORD: Somerset Berkley, 1-0
HIGHLIGHTS: The Raiders took three of five matches against South Coast Conference opponent Apponequet.
Abbie O'Brien won her match at second singles for SBR in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Caroline Puccini and Kori Tickel won their match in three sets at first doubles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Gabby Fernandes and Lauren Roosa won at second doubles in straight sets, 6-2 6-1.

Boys Tennis: West Bridgewater 5, Diman 0
LOCATION: West Bridgewater

RECORD: Diman, 0-1
HIGHLIGHTS: The Bengals dropped their season opener on the road against West Bridgewater. Freshmen players Dominic Delgado and Andrew Librera each played well in their debut.

Boys Volleyball: Durfee 3, Dighton-Rehoboth 0
LOCATION: Durfee
DATE: April 4
RECORD: Durfee, 1-1
HIGHLIGHTS: The Hilltoppers swept three straight sets — 29-27, 25-13, and 25-21 — against Dighton-Rehoboth in their home opener. Camron DeMello led the way for Durfee with 14 kill shots and two blocks. Jack Gauvin had 26 assists while Chris Milfort chipped in with eight kill shots. Ellias DaSilva finished with 23 digs.
NEXT UP: The Hilltoppers travel to North Quincy on Wednesday.
Boys Track: Diman 82, Bristol-Plymouth 54; Southeastern 93, Diman 43
LOCATION: Southeastern

RECORD: Diman, 1-1
HIGHLIGHTS: The Bengals split their tri-meet with Bristol-Plymouth and Southeastern. Nathan Nascimento took first for Diman in the 100 (11.2) and 200 (23.5). Ethan Cabral won the 400 meters (55.6) and Cashton Richard picked up a first in the 400 hurdles (63.1). Will Ferreira placed second in both the 2-mile (11:32) and mile (5:28). "Great start to the season," Bengals head coach Tom Libera said. "We have a lot of new athletes and they impressed today. Very happy with the split. Southeastern is a strong team."

Girls Track: Diman 93.5, Bristol-Plymouth 42.5; Diman 68, Southeastern 68
LOCATION: Southeastern

RECORD: Diman, 1-0-1
HIGHLIGHTS: The Bengals won and tied their tri-meet against Bristol-Plymouth and Southeastern on the road. Emma Foley won three events — 100 hurdles (17.5), long jump (15'8) and triple jump (33' 2). Inez Medeiros took first place in the 100 (12.8), first in the 200 (26.5), and third in the long jump (13'9). Kaitlyn Nickelson placed first overall in the high jump (5'0) and third in the triple jump (29'10). Grace Flattery finished second in the high jump, (4'10), the triple jump (31'2), and 400 hurdles (1:21). Other top finishers were Julia Latour (javelin; 83'5), Katie Miranda (discus; 62'6) shot put (24'5) and Kaylee Lachapelle (javelin; 73'9).
