Space-themed playground launches at magnet school in Thousand Oaks

A space-themed playground got its formal launch Friday at a Thousand Oaks elementary school.

Students and officials gathered at Ladera STARS Academy to show off the $179,000 facility, which boasts tubular supports outlining bold geometric shapes. As attendees looked on, third- to fifth-grade students got a chance to explore the slides, tunnels and other spaces.

The playground is the 10th the Conejo Valley Unified School District has built using funds from Measure I, a bond measure approved by voters in 2014 to pay for $197 million in facilities upgrades.

The play site, as with the nine others built with Measure I funds, is accessible under the Americans with Disabilities Act. RecWest Outdoors Products Inc., based in Westlake Village, provided the Hedra-design equipment, referring to the modular, geometric style.

Kimberly Gold, the district's communications coordinator, said the configuration features "continuous circuits that create a hive of evolving activity."

The K-5 magnet school previously opened a nature-themed primary playground in 2018 using Measure I money. The "STARS" in the school's name stands for science, technology, arts and rigorous scholarship.

“It is important for playground structures to provide challenges and opportunities for growth, as well as exploration and imagination,” said Lori Wall, the school's principal, in a statement.
