Simi Valley's bid for first CIF-Southern Section girls volleyball title comes up short

The magical, joyous, united quest of the Simi Valley High girls volleyball team fell one dream short Saturday night.

In search of the program's first Southern Section title, playing on their home court, the Pioneers fell in three games, 28-26, 26-24, 25-16, to a tall, athletic Arrowhead Christian in the CIF-SS Division 6 championship game.

"They played at a faster pace than we're used to, and (Arrowhead Christian) was able to keep the pressure on," said Simi Valley coach Samantha Crane. "But our girls kept battling. I couldn't be prouder of this group. They're very special."

The Pioneers prospered all season with a tight team chemistry and close player bonding that earned a 21-8 record and the top seed for the Division 6 playoffs. Before Saturday night, Simi Valley rolled through four playoffs matches without dropping a set.

At game's end, the camaraderie remained. Players hugged, smiles were flashed — even while intermixed with a few tear-tinged eyes.

"We're such a close team, that's what I'll always remember about this season," said senior middle blocker Abby Montana. "We played for each other. We cared about each other."

Olivia Campisi, the junior outside hitter, said the Pioneers tried to draw on the same success formula they had rode all season.

"We wanted to keep the energy up, keep encouraging and relying on each other," she said. "We battled. I'm so glad to be a part of this team and enjoyed everything we did together."

She said Simi Valley still made history this season with a first trip to the championship match.

"No team had ever done this before," she said. "We made history, and that's something we're all proud of. We've had a great season."

Senior outside hitter Alesia Thomas led the Pioneers with 10 kills, 14 digs and two service aces. Setter Kezia Bocasan had 21 assists and 10 digs, Campisi collected 13 digs and a pair of aces and Camdyn Hodgins had nine digs and two aces.

Thomas plopped down on a chair on the team sidelines at match's end.

She took solace that Simi Valley's season is not yet done. The Pioneers will be included in the CIF State playoffs. Brackets will be released Sunday afternoon.

"Really glad we get another chance," she said.

The first two games were veritable slugfests.

Simi Valley built a 20-16 lead, fell behind 22-20, then staved off three game points with some dig-down-deep effort. But a kill by junior outside hitter Taylor Wilson won the game for Arrowhead Christian at 28-26.

The Pioneers tried to rally in Game 2.

Three consecutive points, including an ace by Campisi and a kill by Thomas, pulled Simi Valley into a 21-21 tie. The Pioneers saved another game point before a service error and closing block gave the Eagles the set.

In Game 3, Arrowhead Christian rolled to a 16-10 lead and were never challenged. The Eagles improved to 22-6.
