This could be a significant week for KU basketball and some transfer portal targets
LAWRENCE — Over the course of two days earlier this month, Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self outlined a vision for the Jayhawks’ plan in the transfer portal ahead of the 2023-24 season.
On April 5, Self discussed looking for three of the best players possible to add to the roster. That’s how many transfers the team could add, given who was in line to either leave or return at that moment. With those spots, he suggested a wish list that included players with height on the perimeter who could shoot and a big man.
On April 6, Self once again mentioned they had at least three spots to work with for transfers. He highlighted the need for athleticism on the perimeter and perimeter shooting. He indicated they’d go after players who might be able to get their own shot so the offense isn’t so dependent on the creativity of Dajuan Harris Jr., who’s among those set to return for next season.

Fast forward to this week, and there are three transfer targets who’ve been identified through that vision who could take significant steps forward in their recruitments. Those are Nicolas Timberlake (Towson), Harrison Ingram (Stanford) and Hunter Dickinson (Michigan). And should any of them decide to play for Self and Kansas, that’ll put the Jayhawks in a much better position to contend for Big 12 Conference titles and more next season.
“If any transfer ever, like, DM’s me or something, I’d say the best things in the world to them,” Jalen Wilson, an All-American for Kansas this past season who’s now preparing for the NBA draft, said Sunday after a 2023 Barnstorming Tour event. Wilson was speaking generally about if he has a role at all in his college program’s efforts in this area, and added: “I mean, obviously, I want my school to always be great and be in winning position. So, I mean, if they reach out I’ll talk to them for sure.”
Here’s a closer look at what’s happening with Timberlake, Ingram and Dickinson.
Nicolas Timberlake
Timberlake spent the past five years at Towson, which listed him this past season as a 6-foot-4 and 205-pound guard. He’s been an All-Colonial Athletic Association first-team talent the past two and a lethal 3-point shooter. He has already visited Kansas, and the highly sought-after veteran made a Twitter post Sunday that this is a decision week.
Harrison Ingram
Ingram is a former 247Sports Composite five-star prospect in the class of 2021 who spent the initial years of his college career at Stanford, which listed him as a 6-foot-7 and 230-pound forward this past season. He was a regular contributor at his first stop and could take a significant step forward offensively as a talent if he can improve as a shooter. According to 247Sports, he was set to visit Kansas this week but is now rescheduling.
Hunter Dickinson
Dickinson is perhaps the most eye-catching name in the portal, given how accomplished his three-year stay at Michigan was. Dickinson, listed as a 7-foot-1 and 260-pound center this past season, is an All-America caliber talent who has shown he’s even capable of hitting 3s as well. According to 247Sports, he is set to visit Kansas this week, too.
