Shadow Hills alum Taylor Ward named American League player of the week for Los Angeles Angels
Former Shadow Hills High School star Taylor Ward has gone from fighting for a roster spot in spring training with the Los Angeles Angels to the American League player of the week.
Ward was named the league's player of the week Monday for April 25-May 1. The 28-year-old, now the Angels’ every day right fielder, scored more runs (10) and drove in more runs (11) than any player in baseball during the week. He had a .448 batting average, an on-base percentage of .484 and a slugging percentage of 1,000.
Part of the eye-popping slugging percentage was Ward hitting four home runs in the week. That included his first two home run game on April 25 against Cleveland. On April 27, Ward had a grand slam, a triple and a double against Cleveland.

Ward was the Angels first-round draft pick in 2015 after his career at Fresno State. Switching to third baseman from catcher, Ward debuted in the big leagues in 2018. He has bounced back and forth from the Angels to the team’s Triple-A affiliate in Salt Lake City with a career batting average of .247 entering the year. Ward won the right field position for the team out of spring training, though he started the year on the injured list.
Going into Monday’s play, Ward was hitting .400 for the season with five home runs and 13 RBIs this season.
