Selton Miguel leads second-half surge as Kansas State basketball tops Florida A&M 67-57 in opener
MANHATAN — The Kansas State Wildcats needed a nine-point run midway through the second half to finally create some separation Wednesday night on the way to a season-opening 67-57 victory over Florida A&M at Bramlage Coliseum.
But not before the visiting Rattlers exposed some serious K-State flaws.
The Wildcats finished the first half with an 11-4 run to lead 33-30 at the break, but alarmingly managed just four points in the paint while settling for 3-pointers. Nijel Pack, who led K-State with 18 points, scored 13 in the half, including three 3-pointers.
K-State also had no answer for FAMU senior guard MJ Randolph, who repeatedly got to the basket and led all scorers with 27 points.
On the bright side, once they began attacking the basket after the break, the Wildcats flourished offensively, shooting 57.1% in the second half to finish at 42.0. Selton Miguel, shut out in the first half had three of his team's four baskets during the pivotal 9-0 run — center Kaosi Ezeagu scored inside on the other — and finished with 10 points.
The Wildcats finished the game with 20 points in the paint and came back to outrebound FAMU, 35-32, after the Rattlers had a 20-17 edge on the boards in the first half.
In addition to Pack and Miguel, K-State got 12 points from Mark Smith. Miguel led the Wildcats with seven rebounds and Markquis Nowell came off the bench to dish out six assists.
Another positive was the return of center Davion Bradford, who was expected to miss the game while recovering from an illness. The 7-footer logged 14 minutes and contributed three points and three rebounds.
The Wildcats now have a week off before playing host to Omaha next Wednesday.
