'Selena' among 25 movies added to National Film Registry, a list of culturally significant motion pictures
Nearly 25 years later, the autobiographical film "Selena" has been inducted into the National Film Registry.
The registry is a list of films that are culturally, historically or aesthetically significant that are recommended for preservation by motion picture studios, the Library of Congress or filmmakers.
On Tuesday, the Library of Congress announced the films, including "The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring," "A Nightmare on Elm Street," "Return of the Jedi," "Wall-E" and "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane." The 2021 selections have films dating back nearly 120 years and brings the number of movies in the registry to 825.

Released in 1997, "Selena" showcases the life of Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, played by Jennifer Lopez. The film tells the story of the young musician's rise to fame in her family band and her tragic death when she was murdered by the head of her fan club after an argument.
Selena's legacy lived on in the world through a Netflix series, a podcast, a comic book, a children's book and in many other artistic representations. The singer recently posthumously received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 63rd annual Grammy Awards in March.
Turner Classic Movies will host a television special screening of a selection of films named to the registry this year at 7 p.m. Friday.
