Same day, same room: South Shore Hospital nurse who helped deliver New Year's baby has déjà vu

WEYMOUTH – On New Year's Day, nurse Kathy Rondinelli helped mother Ranae Caizzi deliver a baby boy named Jackson at South Shore Hospital.

Exactly 18 years before, Rondinelli delivered her youngest daughter, Rachael, in the same hospital, in the same room, on the same day.

"It was a special moment for me," said Rondinelli, a Quincy resident.

Rondinelli will mark 22 years working at South Shore Hospital this February, she said, and has been a nurse for 24 years. Rondinelli said she almost didn't spend the morning with Caizzi – she was scheduled to tend to a patient in a different room.

When she came into work, however, Rondinelli was assigned the patient down the hall. At 10:15 am. Saturday, Jan. 1, Jackson Caizzi entered the world.

A little while after, the nurse realized the coincidence.

"It took me a minute," Rondinelli said. "I was like, "Oh my God.'"

She felt gratitude later for the nurse who took over her original assignment, Rondinelli said, giving her the chance to help deliver another mother's New Year's Day baby.

Saturday marked the first time Rondinelli had helped delivered a baby on New Year's Day since her daughter's birth 18 years ago, though she's delivered "an awful lot" of babies throughout the rest of the year, she said.

"I think I probably always took it off because it was my daughter's birthday," she said.
