In Salisbury, significant flooding from winter storm forces street closures
The city of Salisbury urges motorists to be aware of rapidly changing road conditions in the wake of the ongoing winter storm.
Due to significant flooding in the downtown, Carroll Street, Fitzwater Street and Lake Street areas, a number of streets have been closed to all through traffic and are stationed with barricades. The city urges motorists to not try driving down a flooded or barricaded street.
Forecasts showed a 3-foot surge with the incoming high tide at 3:24 a.m. Friday following a 4-foot surge earlier that afternoon. More flooding is anticipated with Saturday’s second high tide at 3:56 p.m.
Field Operations crews are prepared for a range of weather conditions, and have begun salting city roads, bridges and downtown Salisbury in anticipation of icy roads through Saturday night into Sunday. Throughout the weather event, downtown streets will periodically close based upon impact of tidal storm surge and freezing conditions.
Citizens are urged to stay at home and avoid driving if at all possible.
If residents must drive during this event, the city warns that most slippery surfaces do not appear as hazardous as they actually are. Bridges, overpasses and intersections are common areas where the pavement freezes faster than on ordinary roadways. Slow down and allow extra distance when braking.
