Ruston, Destrehan, John Curtis top LSWA Class 5A football team

Destrehan quarterback Jai Eugene Jr. and John Curtis linebacker Justin Horne lead the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 5A All-State football team.

Eugene and Horne were selected by a statewide panel of sports writers as the Offensive and Defensive players of the year, respectively after each helped his school win an LHSAA state championship. Ruston’s Jerrod Baugh was voted as the Coach of the Year for reaching the state final after four straight losses in the quarterfinals. Ruston reached the state final for the first time since 1998.

Eugene was selected to the team as an athlete and completed 95 of 155 passes for 1,898 yards with 23 touchdowns and three interceptions. He rushed 93 times for 724 yards and 13 scores. He scored the winning touchdown on a 29-yard run in the fourth quarter as Destrehan defeated Ruston 17-10 in the Division I Non-Select state final. Although a quarterback in high school, the Tulane signee projects as a defensive back in college. Eugene is among five Destrehan players selected to the team.

Horne, a Texas Tech signee, had 144 tackles, 17 for loss with 6 sacks and 3 passes defended. The District 9-5A Defensive MVP showcased the same speed that helped him become a state championship hurdler in the spring.

Sean Williams, 53, faces a minimum mandatory term of 15 years in prison and up to 30 years in prison as to each of the three counts in the federal indictment. According to a police report, a Western Carolina University campus police officer found Williams asleep in his car last year.

(Reuters) -Republican Dave McCormick won the U.S. Senate election in Pennsylvania, Decision Desk HQ projected on Thursday, beating Democratic incumbent Bob Casey in an important win for Republicans hoping to capture a majority in the chamber. Pennsylvania will conduct a legally required statewide recount of the ballots because McCormick's lead is within one-half of 1 percent of the total votes, Commonwealth Secretary Al Schmidt said on Wednesday. McCormick has 3,380,310 votes, or 48.93%, and Casey has 3,350,972, or 48.50%, Schmidt said.

Smithfield Foods, one of the nation’s largest meat processors, has agreed to pay $2 million to resolve allegations of child labor violations at a plant in Minnesota, officials announced Thursday. An investigation by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry found that the Smithfield Packaged Meats subsidiary employed at least 11 children at its plant in St. James ages 14 to 17 from April 2021 through April 2023, the agency said. Smithfield let nine of them work after allowable hours and had all 11 perform potentially dangerous work, the agency alleged.

Republicans went to court in Pennsylvania on Thursday amid vote counting in the U.S. Senate election between Democratic Sen. Bob Casey and Republican David McCormick, as the campaigns prepare for a recount and press counties for favorable ballot-counting decisions. The lawsuits ask courts not to allow counties to count mail-in ballots where the voter didn’t write a date on the return envelope or wrote an incorrect date. The two GOP suits could be among many before the last vote in the Senate race is counted, especially with the contest headed toward a state-mandated recount.
