Roundup: Johnstown girls soccer stays hot, beats Highland
Seniors led the way for the Johnstown girls soccer team Saturday as the Johnnies moved over .500 with a 3-1 victory against visiting Highland.
Senior Abby Ruffle scored as did Cameron Goddard and Kylee Wade. Senior Miranda Tyack added an assist as did Jordan Ellis and Madison McKee, and senior Hailey Hill made four saves.
The Johnnies (6-5-4), who started 0-4-2, won just one match last season. They are searching for the program's first winning season since 2016 and visit Lakewood on Monday.
Valley wins at Northridge
Emma Cubbison, Reagan Campbell and Emily McCullough scored twice each for Licking Valley in a 9-2 victory at Northridge.
Avery Williams, Aubree Wells and Abby Glancy also scored for the Panthers (7-4-2), and Malakiha Bunn made eight saves.
Ruby Cermak had a goal and an assist for the Vikings (1-5-2) and Ava Travis a goal.
VOLLEYBALL
Utica sweeps
Alexa Gosnell totaled nine kills and 15 assists for Utica in a victory against visiting Danville, 25-23, 25-22, 25-19.
Emilee Ellis added seven kills, three aces and 14 assists, Emma Kimpel nine kills, Carlie Parsons five kills and 11 digs and Kristen Ryan three aces for Utica (7-13).
CROSS COUNTRY
Granville girls wear crown
Zoee Lehman ran a time of 18:09.4 to win the individual race and lead Granville to the team title during Thomas Worthington's Les Eisenhart Invitational.
Ella Johnson followed in fourth (18:36.4), Kara Bergeron ninth (19:04.9), Lillian Eckels 16th (19:26.9) and Sophia Poling 22nd (19:40.9) for the Blue Aces.
Meredith Pyle 27th (19:44.9), Katie Sites 60th (20:52.4), Annabel Fish 64th (20:54.4), Kennedy Firth 81st (21:16.6) and Makenzie Adams 83rd (21:17.1) led Newark.
In the boys race, Jacob Brechbill 34th (16:40.7), Luca Stukey 44th (16:50.2) and Londyn Raines 132nd (18:02.2) led Newark.
Rafferty wins for Lakewood
Corey Rafferty ran a time of 15:31 to win the individual title at Liberty Union and lead Lakewood to a runner-up team finish.
Following for the Lancers were Caleb Rafferty fourth (16:00), Ryan Byers ninth (16:44), Ashton Spaysky 13th (17:05) and Jacob Rafferty 24th (18:15).
In the girls race, Olivia O'Neill placed eighth (21:33) and Landry Driskel 10th (21:59) to lead Lakewood.
Beverick takes second
Cameron Beverick raced to a runner-up finish in a time of 17:20.36 on his home course in the small school race of the Johnstown Harrier XC Showdown.
Austin Kennedy, leading runner-up Utica, followed in seventh (18:04.70), Johnstown's Collin Willard eighth (18:05.00) and Utica's Jordan Taylor ninth (18:12.78), Anthony Unger 10th (18:13.01) and Brayden Ricketts 12th (18:23.35).
Licking Heights' Oliver Mills finished 17th (18:03.64) and Logan Summers 22nd (18:21.45) in the big school race.
In the girls race, Heights' Addison Caudill took runner-up (20:06.81), and Utica's Camryn Baker was right behind in third (20:41.26). Johnstown's Reece Savage eighth (21:13.57), Utica's Stella Bowman 11th (22:03.14) and Heights' Morgan Watkins 14th (22:19.92) were next.
