US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who was accused by Ankara of organising a failed 2016 coup, has died in exile in the United States aged 83, his movement and the Turkish government said Monday. Gulen, who lived in the United States since 1999, was the bete noire of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who accused him of heading a "terror organisation".

Lebanese were surveying the damage on Monday after overnight Israeli strikes hit nearly a dozen branches of a Hezbollah-run financial institution that Israel says is used to fund attacks but where many ordinary people keep their savings. The strikes targeted Al-Qard Al-Hassan branches in the southern neighborhoods of Beirut, across southern Lebanon and in the Bekaa, where Hezbollah has a strong presence. The Israeli military had issued evacuation warnings ahead of the strikes, and there were no reports of casualties.

A Japanese police chief apologizes to a man acquitted after 50 years on death row
A Japanese police chief on Monday apologized in person to Iwao Hakamada for his decades-long suffering that started from an overbearing investigation and wrongful conviction that had kept him on death row until last month, when he was acquitted in a retrial. The 88-year-old Hakamada, a former boxer, was acquitted by the Shizuoka District Court, which said police and prosecutors had collaborated to fabricate and plant evidence against him, and forced him to confess with violent, hourslong closed interrogations. Shizuoka Prefectural Police chief Takayoshi Tsuda on Monday visited Hakamada at his home and offered an apology in person.

Investors expect volatile Nasdaq return for AI firm split from Russia's Yandex
Investors in Amsterdam-based Nebius Group expect volatile trading on Monday when the AI infrastructure firm's Nasdaq listing, formerly held by Yandex, often dubbed "Russia's Google", is revived following a lengthy suspension. Trading was suspended soon after Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, when the stock traded under Yandex's ticker through its Amsterdam-based parent company. In July, Nebius emerged following a $5.4 billion deal to split Yandex's Russian and international assets.

Fethullah Gülen, a reclusive U.S.-based Islamic cleric who inspired a global social movement while facing accusations he masterminded a failed 2016 coup in his native Turkey, has died. Fethullah Gülen was in his eighties and had long been in ill health. The state-run Anadolu Agency quoted Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan as saying the death has been confirmed by Turkish intelligence sources.

Moldova's election was not free and the results showed a "hard-to-explain" increase of votes in favour of President Maia Sandu and the European Union, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday. "What we see is a mechanically hard-to-explain rate of increase in votes in favour of Sandu and in favour of those referendum participants who favoured an EU orientation", Peskov said. A knife-edge majority of 50.17% voted "yes" in Moldova's pivotal referendum on joining the European Union, nearly final results showed on Monday, after Sandu said Sunday's twin votes had been marred by "unprecedented" outside interference.

Biden administration proposes free over-the-counter birth control
The Biden administration is proposing a rule that would provide women with private insurance access to over-the-counter birth control pills and other contraceptives at no cost, the White House said on Monday. The rule, which expands a federal mandate requiring health insurers to cover preventative care services at no cost to patients under the Affordable Care Act, is being proposed by the Departments of Health and Human Services, Labor, and the Treasury and would come into effect in 2025 if finalized. "This rule, once finalized, will expand contraception coverage for 52 million women of reproductive age with private health insurance," White House Gender Policy Council Director Jennifer Klein said during a briefing.
