ZACK GUZMAN: Let's get back into that trade-off, though, as we talk about states reopening, as we like highlighting the trade-off between that and the rise in cases, regarding coronavirus, fine as long as things don't get out of hand. And our own Kristin Myers has been digging into the data around that front as economies reopen. Kristin?

KRISTIN MYERS: Hey, Zack. Yeah, so obviously, we're at those unemployment numbers are going to start dropping, as we seek now all 50 states have actually decided, in some measure and in some way, decided to reopen. Now globally, the World Health Organization has said that they've actually seen one of the largest spikes in cases in just 24 hours. That number is 100,000 new cases in just one day.

Now, for context here, there's over 5 million cases globally with nearly 330,000 deaths worldwide. But here in the United States, there's over 1 and 1/2 million cases with nearly 94,000 deaths. That number might go up as we decide to reopen.

Now, when it comes to reopening, there was only four seats left in holding out in lockdown-- New Jersey, Delaware, Michigan, and Illinois. But now all of those states have decided, in some measure, to reopen pretty much by the end of the month or June 1. Michigan deciding to open with retailers, restaurants, and bars this week, actually. But all of these other states are going for either a May 29, May 20, or June 1 target for a phase one reopening. They're opening up either by sections or by counties or by region within the states. So we're going to see all 50 states fully reopened pretty shortly.

But this, of course, is going to cause fears that there's going to be this second wave of coronavirus cases. As you can imagine, as all these states reopen, CDC Director Robert Redfield said that there could be another flare-up, which will cause a winter lockdown in this states. So that's pretty bad news the president, who has been saying, you know, that we're going to transition, open up everything, and that everything will be all right, Zack.

ZACK GUZMAN: Yeah, and I mean, we're seeing this play out in states as well like Wisconsin, as we highlighted, people going out to bars, packed in there without masks in Wisconsin, one of those states reporting a more than two times day-over-day increase in cases. Of course, people might want to shift to looking at hospitalization rates as well but still a little bit of a troubling return to a case count rise. Kristin Myers, appreciate you bringing us the data on that front.
