Region Boys Basketball: Five Pensacola-area teams qualify for FHSAA State tournament
Five appears to be the magic number in the Pensacola area this winter.
After five Pensacola-area teams qualified for the state tournament in boys soccer and another five programs made the big dance in girls basketball, five local boys basketball teams remain in the hunt for a state championship.
The Florida High School Athletic Association released the boys playoff brackets across all classifications on Sunday afternoon. And when it was all said and done, Booker T. Washington, Gulf Breeze, Jay, Pine Forest and West Florida have qualified.
The brackets across classifications 2A-7A feature four regions that each consist of eight teams per region. That group of eight includes four district champions and four at-large bids determined by FHSAA rankings. Each district champion will host a regional quarterfinal unless matched up against a higher-seeded district winner.

Meanwhile in Class 1A, the size of the regions include four teams apiece.
The Dolphins, Eagles and Royals each earned automatic bids by virtue of winning their respective district championship. The Aggies and Wildcats are playoff bound after receiving at-large bids.
Three of the five teams will start their championship journey at home.
Holding the area's best record at 22-3 and coming off its second consecutive District 1-6A title, Gulf Breeze was named the No. 4 seed in Region 1-6A and is host No. 5 Nease (18-8) out of Ponte Vedra.
In the same region, Tate (18-5) earned the sixth seed and will travel to No. 3 Oakleaf (23-1). Hailing from Orange Park, the Knights have won their last 18 games and are the District 3-6A champions.
Elsewhere, Pine Forest hopes to successfully defend its Region 1-5A crown. Following a dramatic run to the District 1-5A title, the Eagles (15-11) begins their defense at No. 3 Columbia (18-9). Playing out of Lake City, the Tigers claimed the District 2-5A championship.
Booker T. Washington (17-6) fell to Pine Forest to suffer an early exit from the district tournament. However, the Wildcats are the No. 2 seed in Region 1-5A and will host No. 7 Jacksonville Westside (16-10).
Lastly, but not least, Jay enters regionals with the area's longest active winning streak (15). Following their first district title in more than a quarter of a century, the Royals (21-3) nabbed the No. 1 seed in Region 1-1A. They are host to No. 4 Bethlehem (23-4) in a semifinal matchup.
All games are scheduled to take place on Thursday.
