Randall's McConnell, Springlake-Earth's Goodman bring home gold at state cross country meet

On the first day of the UIL state cross country championships, runners from Class 1A, 3A and 5A classifications competed in their respective races at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

Several runners from the Panhandle excelled on the course and brought home hardware. Here's a recap from the competition at cross country's biggest stage.

Class 1A high school cross country

Taytum Goodman is now 2-for-2 at the state cross country championships.

The sophomore from Springlake-Earth won her second consecutive state title after leading the pack by more than a minute, finishing the 2-mile course in 10 minutes, 59.36 seconds.

Claude's Renee Fouquet placed 26th overall with a time of 13:18.22 followed by Lazbuddie's Madison Tyler in 27th with a time of 13:20.16. Chloe Birkenfeld of Nazareth placed 43rd with a final time of 13:39.78.

On the boys' side, Texline and Booker finished seventh and eighth as a team, respectively.

The Tornadoes finished with 185 points and were paced by junior Stratton Potter, who placed 11th overall with a time of 17:12.10. Will Clay placed 49th (18:40.50), Angel Herrera placed 56th (18:49.50), Joe Clay placed 61st (18:55.10) and Trayven Wilson rounded the scoring in 119th (20:14.30). Barrett Bezner's 137th place and 21:50.00 time did not score.

Adrian Rosales paced the Kiowas in 18th with a time of 17:41.0 as Booker finished with 211 points. Julian Rosales placed 69th (18:58.00), Juan Us placed 71st (19:01.10), Emmanuel Estrada placed 74th (19:04.90) and Damian Cervantes finished 100th (19:31.30) to round out the scoring. Tristin Nelson placed103rd (19:38.00) while Jesus Jimenez placed 107th (19:43.5) but did not score.

Individually, Silverton's Alex Acevedo placed 13th with a time of 17:20.70. Happy's Gus Fields finished 51st in 18:43.1 while teammate Landon Flowers ended in 77th with a time of 18:59.3. Springlake-Earth's Joshua Samaron placed 55th with a time of 18:47.70.

Claude's Hunter Lovell finished 83rd in 19:10.6 while Nazareth's Bryson Brockman placed 108th with a time of 19:43.70.

Class 3A high school cross country

The Canadian girls' team, making its first appearance, finished sixth overall with 191 points.

The Lady Cats were paced by Konnar McClendon, who placed seventh with a time of 11:58.20. Arionna Black placed 37th (12:43.50), Payton Lee placed 57th (12:57.90), Ella Walser placed 106th (13:34.50) and Elizabeth Guerrero placed 114th (13:40.80) to round out the scoring. Kathia Aragon placed 123th (14:00.80) and Brooklyn Beedy placed 135th (14:21.8) but did not score.

Individually, Destinee Perez and Braylen Lusby competed for Spearman. Perez finished 27th overall with a time of 12:30.00 while Lusby placed 46th with a time of 12:50.20.

On the boys' side, River Road finished 14th as a team with 289 points, being paced by Crawford Kiser who took home the bronze with a time of 16:00.30. Christian Rosales placed 79th (17:54.00), Garrett Furman placed 101st (18:19.90), Jacob Bell placed 130 (19:08.20) and Armando Flores finished 131st overall in 19:08.90. Andres Rodriguez finished 144th (20:01.20) and did not score.

Individually, Azariah Gonzales of Dimmitt placed 29th overall in 17:00.70. Hugo Briones of Tulia placed 37th with a time of 17:12.50. Ethan Ramos of Spearman placed 44th with a time of 17:22.60.

Class 5A high school cross country

Cameron McConnell won the girls' individual title with a time of 17:15.40 and helped lead Randall to a sixth-place finish as a team with 147 points.

Hailey Roberson came next in 44th (19:21.2), followed by Ariyah Gomez in 52nd (19:25.20), Romie Rubio in 53rd (19:26.20) and Sadie Sanchez in 69th (19:38.90) to round out the scoring. Sierra Sanchez finished 85th (19:47.70) and Alex Pinter finished 86th (19:48.20) but did not score.

Amarillo High finished 12th as a team with 301 and was paced by Brooke Latham, with finished 51st overall with a time of 19:24.9. Emma Milsow came next in 74th (19:40.8) followed by Tatum Abbruscato in 90th (19:50.50), Kylee Costley in 11th (20:12.70) and Ayla Baer in 125th (20:42.50) to round out the scoring. Kate Morris placed 129th (20:58.40) and Mali Gomez placed 131st (21:09.00) but did not score.

On the boys' side, Amarillo High's Isaac McGill brought home the silver medal as he finished with a 15:10.0, 4 seconds behind state champion Walker St. John of Grapevine. The Sandies finished 10th as a team with a total of 244 points.

Miles Cox finished 34th (16:15.70), followed by Noah Watt in 108th (17:16.00), Parker Maybin in 111th (17:19.30), and Cooper Clawson in 119th (17:32.40). Jonathan Holloway finished 139th (18:17.00) and Jerin Perkins finished 140th (18:17.70) but did not score.

Individually, Tascosa's Emilio Salas placed 39th overall with a time of 16:22.7.
