Primary 2023: Palmyra Magisterial Judge results
Results are in for the Palmyra Magisterial Judge primary race, with an unopposed Democrat taking their spot and a very close Republican ballot.
Cynthia Lyons, who cross filed to appear on both the Democratic and Republican ballots, won the Democratic race with 1,198 votes.
Lyons was the only Democrat on the ballot.
"I absolutely cannot wait to be there in November, I'm really excited about it," Lyons said. "I think it's really important, and again, congratulations to everyone that was on the ballot today, but as we move forward we're going to continue to do exactly what we did up until now. We're going to knock on a ton of doors and make sure that we have a better percentage of voters in November than we did today."
"I was a little disappointed, and I think others would tell you the same thing, with the turnout overall, countywide."
Lyons said that her experience with community involvement coupled with her educational background, having both a masters degree and a law degree, put her right where she needs to be.
"I think it's important for people to know that this is a full time-job, frankly more than full-time sometimes," she said.
David Warner, an attorney at Buzgon Davis Law firm, looks to have won the Republican primary for the seat with 1,207 votes, just 19 votes more than Michael Corricelli who received 1,188.
Warner told the Lebanon Daily News that he did not wish to comment on the results of the election at the moment because of the closeness of the race, and will be waiting for the election board to certify the results.
Corricelli was not immediately available for comment.
Dennis Eckenrode, who received 597 votes, congratulated Warner for coming out ahead on the night of the election and wished him the best of luck moving forward.
Lyons received 910 votes on the Republican ballot.
Late last year, Judge Carl Garver announced that he would not seek re-election and would step down as Magisterial District Judge at the end of his term.
Garver was first elected in 2011, and told the Lebanon Daily News in announcing his retirement that taking another term would mean that he would be 73 by the end of it. Instead, he wishes to enjoy his health serving the community for as long as he has it.
The 52-03-05 magisterial district includes Palmyra, North and South Londonderry Townships, Cold Springs Township and East Hanover Township.
Garver said that he hoped whoever takes his seat would continue the good working relationship with the community that he had built.
A magisterial district judge handles all traffic cases, minor criminal cases, eviction cases and civil cases involving up to $12,000.
Magisterial judges also set bail and conduct preliminary hearings in misdemeanor and felony criminal cases.
Lebanon County has six magisterial district judge seats.
