Top local Michigan girls basketball teams and players for the week of Dec. 20:
Top teams
1. Edwardsburg (4-0)
Next Game: Jan. 4 vs. Mattawan.
Edwardsburg continues to get good balance offensively and great defense. The Eddies got 27 points from Caitlin Tighe, 20 points and four rebounds from Macey Laubach, nine points and five rebounds from Katie Schaible and six steals from Ella Castelucci in a 72-30 win over Paw Paw Tuesday.
And the Eddies followed that up with 18 points, five rebounds and four steals from Schaible, 17 points and eight steals from Laubach, 15 points and four steals from Castelucci and eight points and eight rebounds from Abby Bossler in an 83-31 rout of Three Rivers on Friday.
2. Buchanan (6-0)
Next game: Jan. 4 vs. Three Rivers
Buchanan continues to win despite being shorthanded. LaBria Austin scored 12 points to go with three assists and two steals and Hannah Herman added 11 points and five steals as Buchanan held off Bridgman 39-35 Tuesday. Alexa Burns had five rebounds and Hailey Jonatzke added three assists and three steals. Then with Austin and Jonatzke out with the flu on Friday, freshman Alyssa Carson had nine points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots in the Bucks' 37-26 victory over South Haven. Tompkins chipped in six points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals in that win and Alexa Burns had eight rebounds.
3. Brandywine (6-0)
Next game: Jan. 4 vs. Gobles
Ellie Knapp continues to be a big factor for unbeaten Brandywine. In Tuesday's 59-54 overtime win over Bronson, Knapp had eight points, five assists and six steals. And in Friday's 78-23 victory over Berrien Springs, Knapp scored 14 points to go with six assists and seven steals. Kadence Brumitt added 12 rebounds in the Bronson win and five offensive rebounds against Berrien Springs.
Top players
Caitlin Tighe, Edwardsburg
The 5-5 sophomore has been a huge factor coming off the bench for Edwardsburg. In Tuesday's 72-30 win over Paw Paw, Tighe scored 27 points, grabbed four rebounds, collected nine steals and dished out three assists. Then in an 83-31 rout of Three Rivers on Friday, Tighe followed that up with nine points and four steals.
Miley Young, Brandywine
The 5-8 freshman picked a good time for her breakout game. Young poured in 31 points and grabbed five rebounds as Brandywine stunned previously-unbeaten Bronson 59-54 in overtime Tuesday. Young hit on11 of 19 shots, including 5 of 12 from 3-point range. She scored all 10 of Brandywine's second-quarter points to keep the Bobcats in the game. Young then scored 11 more in the fourth quarter as Brandywine overcame a 14-point deficit to tie the contest. And she tallied five of her team's 10 overtime points. Young followed that up with 11 points in the Bobcats' 78-23 rout of Berrien Springs on Friday.
Amara Palmer, Niles
The 5-10 senior helped Niles split a pair of games. Palmer scored nine points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out three assists in the Vikings' 46-37 loss Tuesday to Otsego. And she had 24 points, 12 rebounds, seven steals and six assists in Niles' 75-30 win Friday over Allegan.
