Poll: Vote for the Journal's May 1-7 Athletes of the Week
We've got another stacked list of nominees after a week filled with impressive performances. There were athletes who shined in lacrosse, golf, baseball, track and field, softball and tennis.
Last week's winners were Spackenkill tennis player Jeet Shahani and John Jay-East Fishkill softball player Nicole Barosa. Shahani received 5,734 votes, topping the small-schools poll, and Barosa got 5,136 votes to win the large-schools.
Voting will be open until 6 p.m. Thursday. This week's nominees:
Large-school nominees
Connor Hitt, Ketcham track & field
He won the 800 meters (2:01.68) and the 3,200 meters (9:32.56) at the Section 1 League 1C championships last week.
Catherine Kelly, Arlington softball
The senior was 4 for 4 with a double and three RBI, leading a seventh-inning comeback in the Admirals' eventual 6-5 win over Roy C. Ketcham last Saturday.

Chris Reese, John Jay baseball
The junior allowed four hits and struck out five in six scoreless innings of his first career start, helping the Patriots pull out a 1-0 win over Carmel.
Owen Paino, Ketcham baseball
He hit a three-run homer in Ketcham's 7-4 win over Arlington last Monday, and he struck out seven in a complete game in 7-1 win against the Admirals.
Riley Pettigrew, Arlington track & field
She won the girls 100 meters (12.72 seconds) and the 200 (25.47) at the Section 1 League 1C championships, leading the Arlington girls team to a league title last week.
Cali DeLawder, Roosevelt softball
She went 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, four RBI and two runs for the Presidents in a win over New Paltz.
Caelyn Deserre, Arlington girls golf
The eighth-grader shot a 2-over 38 at James Baird Golf Course, earning medalist honors, in a match against Carmel.
Abby Kowalczyk, Ketcham track & field
She won the girls 800 meters (2:25.59) and the 1,500 (4:47.72) last Saturday at Franklin D. Roosevelt High School's Race at the Oval Office.
Jadyn Jones, Roosevelt girls lacrosse
The senior made 14 saves, including the 500th of her career, last Monday against Monroe-Woodbury.
Small-school nominees
Drew Cornax, Lourdes boys lacrosse
He had six goals, including the tying score with 58 seconds left, leading the Warriors in a dramatic 16-15 comeback over Goshen last Friday. The junior also eclipsed 100 career goals. Earlier in the week, he scored seven goals in Lourdes' 18-13 win over Cornwall.

Jose Iraola-Ceely, Marlboro track & field
He won the boys shot put (45 feet, 6 inches) and the hammer throw (159 feet, 3 inches), earning field MVP honors at the Tri-Valley Invitational.
Hailey Smith, Pawling softball
She went 3 for 4 with a walk, a homer, a triple, five RBI and four runs scored, leading the Tigers in a win over North Salem last Friday.
Taryn Satkowski, Lourdes girls lacrosse
The freshman totaled 14 goals, seven assists, 10 groundballs and six caused turnovers for the Warriors last week.
Sadie Manger, Pawling girls lacrosse
The seventh-grader scored a career-high seven goals and had four assists, leading the Tigers in a 15-8 win over Arlington last Saturday. She also had six goals and two assists in their 12-11 win over Nanuet last Wednesday.
Ned Van Loan, Lourdes boys tennis
He defeated Highland standout Liam Van Valkenburgh, 6-0, 6-1, at first singles, leading the Warriors in a 4-1 victory last Thursday.
Brady Kelly, Red Hook boys lacrosse
The freshman combined for 10 goals and six assists in the Raiders' wins over New Paltz and Wallkill last week.
Evan Giachinta, Haldane boys lacrosse
The senior had two goals and three assists and notched multiple milestones in the Blue Devils' win over Pawling last Tuesday. He scored his 100th career goal, tallied his 100th assist, and eclipsed 200 points.
