Socorro Police: Domestic incident leads to large police chase, suspect firing gun from vehicle

A domestic incident in Socorro on Wednesday led to a police chase, during which a suspect allegedly fired at police officers and civilians.

Socorro Police Chief David Burton said the incident began about 9:35 a.m. when officers responded to a domestic violence call at a home. A man, who was inside the home, refused to come out and, at about 10:30 a.m., fled the home in a vehicle and a pursuit began.

Several police cars chased a red pickup in the Horizon City and Eastlake area, according to El Paso police and emergency radio traffic.

During the pursuit, the man allegedly fired gunshots at officers and bystanders, carjacked two other vehicles and eventually crashed and was detained at I-10 and Joe Battle Boulevard at 11:16 a.m.

Socorro police returned fire during the chase. No civilians or officers were struck by gunfire, but the suspect was injured and hospitalized. Burton said there were at least seven locations where the suspect shot at bystanders or police officers.

An El Paso Police bomb squad also responded to the home where the domestic incident occurred because the suspect allegedly left on the gas on in the home.

Socorro police, Texas Department of Public Safety, El Paso County Constables, U.S. Border Patrol, Ysleta Tribal Police and El Paso County Sheriff's Office responded to the incident. Multiple police vehicles with damage either from gunfire or sustained in the chase.

Interstate 10 westbound and Gateway West Boulevard were closed at Eastlake because of the police scene at I-10 by Joe Battle, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
