Pacers' Bennedict Mathurin named first-team All-Rookie, first since Smits

INDIANAPOLIS -- Pacers guard Bennedict Mathurin was named to the NBA's All-Rookie First team on Monday, becoming the first Pacers player to earn that honor since Rik Smits in 1988-89 and the fifth player in Pacers history to be named first-team All-Rookie.

Mathurin was joined on the All-Rookie team by Orlando Magic forward and NBA Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero, Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler, Oklahoma City Thunder forward Jalen Williams and Sacramento Kings wing Keegan Murray.

Mathurin, the No. 6 pick out in the 2022 NBA Draft out of Arizona, finished second among all rookies this season behind only Banchero with 16.7 points per game. His 1,302 total points were second only to Banchero's 1,437 and were the third highest total for a Pacers rookie in history behind only Clark Kellogg's 1,625 in 1982-83 and Chuck Person's 1,541 in 1986-87. He finished third among rookies with 413 total field goals, second with 376 total free throws and sixth with 100 total 3-pointers. His 318 rebounds were eighth among all rookies and his 116 assists also put him eighth on the list.

Since Smits was named to the 1988-89 All-Rookie team, the Pacers have had five players reach the second-team including Chris Duarte in 2021-22, Myles Turner in 2015-16, Paul George in 2010-11, Danny Granger in 2005-06 and Jamaal Tinsley in 2001-02. Along with Mathurin and Smits, the other Pacers named first-team were Person in 1986-87, Steve Stipanovich in 1983-84 and Kellogg in 1982-83. Person is the only Pacer to ever be named Rookie of the Year.
