OU vs. OSU football: Five takeaways from Cowboys' epic win over Sooners in Bedlam

STILLWATER — Welcome to Bedlam football, Collin Oliver.

Oklahoma State’s true freshman defensive end sacked Caleb Williams on fourth-and-10 with the game on the line, sealing No. 7 Oklahoma State’s 37-33 win over No. 10 Oklahoma on Saturday night at Boone Pickens Stadium.

It was Oliver’s second sack of the night and he has 9.5 for the season.

For the game, OSU sacked Williams six times and didn’t allow a point in the second half, keying the Cowboy comeback.

Second-half shutout

Through the first half, it looked like the Oklahoma State defense had come back down to Earth.

But the Cowboys rallied, even when the game was crumbling around them.

Despite offensive and special-teams miscues in the third quarter that gave OU a 33-24 lead, the Cowboy defense held tough.

On eight OU possessions In the second half, OSU forced five punts, recovered a fumble and ended the game with back-to-back turnovers on downs in OSU territory.

In the fourth quarter, OSU finally got its offense going, with a touchdown drive of 58 yards. And the Cowboys benefited from a muffed punt by OU that was recovered by Demarco Jones at the Sooners’ 5-yard line.

Jaylen Warren powered into the end zone three plays later for the go-ahead score.

On to Arlington

The Cowboys’ next stop is Arlington, Texas.

No. 7 Oklahoma State will face No. 8 Baylor for the Big 12 championship next Saturday at 11 a.m. at AT&T Stadium.

It will be OSU’s first appearance in the Big 12 championship game. OSU won the 2011 Big 12 title, but the championship game was not in effect that year.

With the win, OSU keeps itself alive in the College Football Playoff conversation as well, and should rise in the polls released on Tuesday.

Third-quarter curse

Through the first half of the season, the third quarter haunted the OSU offense in the form of an inability to score. The quarter turned into a nightmare on Saturday.

Running back Dominic Richardson fumbled on OSU’s first offensive play, and the ball bounced into the end zone where an OSU offensive lineman recovered it for a safety.

Moments later, Brennan Presley muffed a punt that was recovered by OU’s Justin Broiles for a touchdown.

OSU’s 54 yards in the quarter came on the next two drives, but one ended with a missed 44-yard field goal by Tanner Brown, and the next ended with an interception on a tipped Spencer Sanders pass.

OSU was outscored 9-0 in the third quarter.

Record-setting moments

With his second-quarter kickoff return of 100 yards, Oklahoma State sophomore Brennan Presley tied the school record for the longest kickoff return and was the longest since Justin Gilbert had a 100-yarder against Kansas in 2013.

With their second sack of the game and 45th of the season, which came in the first half, OSU set the school record for sacks in a season. The 1983 OSU defense had 44 sacks.

And while it wasn’t a record, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez reached a season milestone. He surpassed the 100-tackle mark for the second time in his career. With his 11 tackles on Saturday, he now has 107 for the season and 386 for his career, which ranks fifth on OSU’s all-time list.
