OU football earns largest margin of victory over Nebraska since 1990 & more stats

LINCOLN, Neb. — OU spoiled the debut of interim Nebraska head coach Mickey Joseph on Saturday.

The Sooners (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) earned a 49-14 win over the Cornhuskers (1-3, 0-1 Big Ten) at Memorial Stadium. After falling behind 7-0 in the early moments of the first quarter, OU erupted for 49 unanswered points to secure the victory.

Here's a look at the win through the numbers.

Nebraska struck first, but OU responded

1: OU's defense entered the day with just one touchdown allowed through its first two games. Nebraska matched that total on its opening drive via a 32-yard touchdown pass from Casey Thompson to Trey Palmer.

61: Dillon Gabriel broke free for a 61-yard touchdown run with 9:30 left in the first quarter. It marked the longest run of his four-year college career, surpassing his 44-yard touchdown run against Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 11, 2021.

1: Jalil Farooq hauled in a 25-yard touchdown reception that gave OU a 14-7 lead with 1:57 left in the first quarter. This marked the sophomore wide receiver's first career touchdown.

2019: Fifth-year tight end Brayden Willis delivered a 28-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Major with 11:35 left in the second quarter. Willis is the first non-quarterback to throw a touchdown for OU since wide receiver Nick Basquine threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Hurts in a game against Oklahoma State on Nov. 30, 2019.

35: OU entered halftime with a 35-7 lead. This marked the most points the team has scored in the first half of a game against a Power Five opponent since it erupted for 48 points against Texas Tech on Oct. 31, 2020.

Sooners piled it on in the second half

2020: Theo Wease hauled in a 15-yard touchdown that gave OU a 49-7 lead with 8:59 left in the third quarter. This marked the redshirt junior wide receiver's first touchdown since a game against Florida on Dec. 30, 2020.

1: Davis Beville fumbled the ball late in the third quarter, and Nebraska recovered it. This marked the first turnover of the season by OU's offense.

49: The Sooners scored 49 unanswered points to take a 49-7 lead. This marked the most unanswered points OU has scored against an FBS opponent since it scored 56 unanswered points in a 63-14 win over Florida Atlantic on Sept. 1, 2018.

8: Nebraska's Chubba Purdy ran for an 8-yard touchdown with 3:17 left in the game. This snapped a streak of 49 unanswered points by OU and made it a 49-14 contest.

OU football milestones

5: Major has recorded five total touchdowns through the first three games of the season. That's the most touchdowns by a non-quarterback at OU through the first three games of a season since DeMarco Murray (seven) in 2010.

35: The Sooners earned a 49-14 win on Saturday. This is tied for OU's largest margin of victory over Nebraska since it earned a 45-10 win on Nov. 23, 1990.

30: OU has scored at least 30 points in 37 of its last 38 true road games going back to 2013. The only exception came last season when the team suffered a 27-14 loss to Baylor on Nov. 13.
