Orrville's Deninssonn Lopez named first team all-district in boys soccer

There was no question that the Orrville boys soccer team had a special class of seniors last season, and the Red Riders were recognized as such.

Leading the group for Orrville was senior Deninssonn Lopez, who was named first-team all-district in Division II by the Greater Akron Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association. Lopez set area benchmarks for career goals with 99 and total points with 233 and also posted 35 assists.

Red Riders seniors Jonathan Gonzales and Ryne Armentrout were named to the all-district second team. Gonzales was electric with some amazing crosses and had an area-record 45 assists, scored 58 goals and finished sixth all-time with 161 points. Armentrout played both ways on the pitch and finished with 40 goals, 39 assists and 119 points.

Bryan Cruz, Kaleb Wayt and Jerson Lopez also earned honorable mention for the Red Riders.

Special honors

∎ Larry Cerniglia, who has enjoyed an outstanding career as Waynedale coach for the last 32 years, was named the GASSCA District Coach of the Year in Division III after leading the Golden Bears to a second-place finish in the Wayne County Athletic League. Waynedale finished 13-4-1 overall and 7-2-1 in the WCAL with 15 league points. Cerniglia has a career record of 240-249-87.

∎ Loudonville's Roy Templeman was named GASSCA Assistant Coach of the Year in Division III after he helped coach Laurie Weber lead the Redbirds to a 10-6-1 overall record and a 2-2-1 mark in the Mid-Buckeye Conference. He helped coach two of the program's most lethal scorers in Sydney Polen and his daughter, Anna Templeman.
