A court in El Salvador on Thursday sentenced three minors to five years in prison and put five more on probation after they were arrested last year following the public release of a video of them making gang signs inside a school. Seven other youths, who were also being prosecuted for alleged links to gangs, were acquitted by the court in the country's capital San Salvador. The minors, aged 12 to 15, were detained after a video shared on the social media platform TikTok, showed them flashing signs connected with the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang, according to police.

De Soto, 61, was elected in November and arrested in December after saying God had called on him to kill several members of the Legislature, including House Speaker Roger Hanshaw and House Majority Leader Pat McGeehan, who are both Republicans.

James Skoufis, a Democrat who sponsored the bill, said his intention is to create a law that will allow law enforcement to go after people who wear masks to intimidate or threaten others, rather than trying to establish a widespread ban on face coverings.
