For the second-straight summer, Bartlesville High basketball stalwart David Castillo is just one cut away from representing the United States in international competition.

On Monday, the USA Basketball U17 National Team leaders included Castillo on the list of 18 finalists for a coveted spot on the final 12-man roster.

The tryouts began with 34 players.

Castillo — who will be a junior this coming school year — was one of eight players from the Class of 2024 to be selected as part of the final 18.

Training camp — which is taking place in Colorado Springs, Colo. — likely will soon make its final cutdown to 12.

The U17 team is set to travel in 10 days to Spain to compete in the FIBA World Cup tournament.

Last summer, Castillo qualified for the USA Basketball U16 National Team, which went on to win the FIBA Americas Cup tourney held in Mexico.

Castillo — a 6-foot-2 point guard — brought home a gold medal from the event, in which he scored 14 points in the final.

During his first two seasons with the Bartlesville High varsity, Castillo is averaging between 24 to 25 points per game. Last season he achieved the 1,000-point career mark in the shortest time span ever by a Bruin.

In addition to his achievements for Bartlesville High, in AAU basketball and for Team USA, Castillo also has received a blitz of full-ride scholarships from prime Division I programs throughout the nation.

A five-star recruit, Castillo received one of his most recent offers from the University of Florida. Multiple Big 12 schools also are on the deep list.

Among the final 18 are: Class of 2023 — Dennis Evans, Jeremy Fears, Ron Holland, Justin McBride, Sean Stewart, D.J. Wagner and Wesley Yates; Class of 2024 — James Brown, David Castillo, Naas Cunningham, Johnuel Fiand, Ian Jackson, Karter Knox, Tyler McKinley and Asa Newell; and, Class of 2025 — Cooper Flagg, Koa Peat and Bryson Tiller.
