One person killed, two others hurt when SUV and pickup truck collide, SC cops say

One person was killed and two others were injured Saturday when an SUV crashed into a pickup truck, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 8 a.m. in Florence County, said Lance Cpl. Lena Butler.

A 2017 Jeep Cherokee was driving east on Old Marion Highway, and near the intersection with Taylor Hill Circle, the SUV crossed left of the center line and into oncoming traffic, according to Butler. The SUV collided with a 2017 Ford F-350 that was heading west, Butler said.

The SUV driver died at the scene, according to Butler.

The Florence County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the SUV driver.

The Ford driver and a passenger in the pickup were injured and taken to an area hospital, Butler said. Further information on their conditions was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the SUV to veer into oncoming traffic was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through June 29, at least 481 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 12 people have died in Florence County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 40 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
