Oklahoma Sooners vs. Kent State Golden Flashes: Sooners Wire staff predictions

The Oklahoma Sooners (1-0) came out of Week 1 having answered several questions after an offseason of turnover and transition.

Aside from the second-quarter lull in which UTEP produced 10 points against the defense and back-to-back three and outs, the Oklahoma Sooners were dominant.

Expect more of the same this week against the Kent State Golden Flashes (0-1), who dropped their season opener to the Washington Huskies, 45-20. Kent State couldn’t keep up offensively, and the Sooners have an offense that can get a big lead in a hurry.

Each week on Sooners Wire, we’ll give you our predictions for the Oklahoma Sooners’ matchup.

Fresh off their 45-13 win against UTEP to kick off the Brent Venables era, Oklahoma looks to keep it rolling versus Kent State.

The game plan against UTEP was vanilla on both sides of the ball, and while I expect largely the same, I could see the Sooners add more wrinkles, trying a few things out for the live reps.

This game should be in Oklahoma’s control by halftime. I’m predicting a heavier dose of the Sooners’ attack through the air. Jalil Farooq is scoring this week.

Defensively, the Sooners will see an up-tempo attack from Kent State. Good thing they have experience practicing against it. Kent State QB Collin Schlee will try to challenge them vertically, but I like that the secondary will have to sweat a little bit this week. It will get opportunities to make plays while the front seven gets to hunt for quarterbacks.

Expect more of what we saw during the UTEP game, but slightly more coherent. Everyone has that bit of real game experience, and the fact that it will not be over 100 degrees on the field will also help.

Dillon Gabriel will throw for another couple of touchdowns, let’s say three on the day. One will go to Marvin Mims, one to Drake Stoops and the last will go to Theo Wease. We will see Davis Beville again in this contest. Hopefully, they’ll let him throw a ball this time.

Expect more of the same from the defense. Kent State doesn’t have as good of a QB as UTEP did, so expect a better day out of the secondary. Another game with half a dozen sacks is very possible.

The Oklahoma Sooners take on the Kent State Golden Flashes in what looks like another mismatch.

The Sooners showed a variety of weapons in their Week 1 win over UTEP. Seven players made a reception, and seven players recorded a carry. We didn’t even see Jayden Gibson or Gavin Sawchuk record a touch. Could that change in Week 2?

Look for the Sooners to attempt to air it out a bit more this week as they try to get their passing game in sync before their road trip to Lincoln, Nebraska. Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. threw for 345 yards and four touchdowns in the Huskies’ Week 1 domination of the Golden Flashes. I expect Gabriel to have his first 300-yard performance of the season as the Sooners win big again to improve to 2-0.
